The never end search for the MTB tire has graced it self-apon me for the first time. I purchased my Schwinn GSX in December 2001 and am hooked. 2 tubes and a rear rim later it is time for new tires. 36 miles of single track is my playground that the US government lets us play on for $10.00 a year. Lots of hard pack, rocks and hills. If it rains you are a mud pie. What is the tire for me? Does it matter if I ride the MTB tires on pavement or will it age the tire faster? I love your website. Cannot afford the jersey. Baby #2 on way. 35 yrs old. Quit smoking January 5th. Ride like my life depends on it.

Kenda Kharisma for more hardpack and less mud. The Kharisma Crystal has a harder, longer lasting compound than the Kharisma Lite. The Lite is, well, lighter and has a softer, grippier compound. If you plan to ride more pavement, than go with the Crystal. The Crystal and Lite use the same tread pattern.

Personally, I train on the Kharisma Crystal and race on the Lite. Mud performance could be better as it packs up quickly and sheds slowly, but still a good all-around performer.

Fortunately, you have lots of great choices. Also consider, in no particular order, IRC Serac, Panaracer Fire XC Pro (127tpi version), and Hutchinson Python.

Panaracer Fire XC get my vote for XC, plus i have ridden them on road and they're still great, havent noticed particularly fast wearing and i have ridden to/ from uni most day for about 6 months on them. :D

I have these same tires, (actually the xc pro but same diff) anyhow they ride nice in mud, soft sand, and rocks. lots of grip, I don't think that pavement would hurt them much but I really don't do urban assault on them :rolleyes:
