I have never shaved my legs, (wish I had when I had my bad crash and sustained severe road rash). I have thought about it though. And I understand that the reason behind shaving is to help prevent complications due to road rash in the event of a crash.

But is it necessary to shave your legs if you ride a 'bent? I have yet to have a severe crash on my 'bent where road rash would be a result of it. Anyone ever experience road rash after crashing on a 'bent? I suppose it is possible but since you are lower to the ground and "in" the bike rather then on it, isn't the danger of road rash not as much as it would be on a wedgie?

I'd think you are correct. Maybe shave the arms since they are sticking out in the wind more than the legs;) and may hit the pavement first. Or just shave the outsides of your legs.

I didn't realize that 'bent cyclists referred to "normal" bikes as "wedgies". That's a great term! I'll have to remember that.

Dude when did shaving your legs ever become necessary?

Bikeman Wedgie, I was used to from researching when I wanted a bike, but I wanted something more "comfortable" than my then current ATB. My 9 year old was just learning to ride her scaled down (20 inch) MTB so I bought a 'bent to ride with her. We had been riding a couple weeks only at this time. I had never mentioned 'bents, diamonds or wedgies to her, I just a had strange bike she thought but since we were riding, didn't care. We were getting ready to start a ride, I was standing next to my LWB holding it up when she said "Dad, do you know what I named my bike?" Well she usually has some girly name for stuff like fluffy, pinks, softy etc. so I just reply "No, so what did you name it?" She says "WEDGIE, cause it always gives me a wedgie!" I was laughing so hard I dropped my bike and broke my bar end mirror. She was tickeled I thought it was so funny, but she did not know the implications.

Leave to kids to come up with that! Perfect! Out of the mouths of babes comes profound statements.

And here I thought you were gonna talk about shaving WHILE riding, way to get my hopes up.
Instead of shaving Idd rather wear shorts with extra materal where one most often slides and thicker gloves so I don't grind my hands. Passin wedgies with all ones body hair a flappin has gotta bug the traditionilists!

B-rider , if you go down your going to get road rash wherever meat meets pavement, whether it's a chuck hole, loss of control or some knothead pulling right in front of you  But I don't shave either and ride a road bike and a bent. Crashed a lot on dirt bikes though, head plants!;)

shaving your arms is creepy, not to mention it doesn't help with aerodynamics. Not only that but people will think you are a swimmer, and that would suck. But shaving your legs isn't too bad and plus it gives you an in with the ladies. Just don't cut yourself or you'll look stupid, plus it hurts like a b*tch. But either way keep it real and do what you want.

I'm just curious, how is shaving your legs an in with girls? do you compare technique or share razor reviews with them? The only thing i shave, other than my face, is my head and that is pure vanity. Nothing like a shaved head!

I've crashed several times on my Vision. Got road rash on my arm....from the elbow to the wrist. Doubt if shaving would have helped any.

Andre,
If you don't shave your legs you are a tweaker and I'm sure you are the rider who is afraid of spandex too. I see people like you all the time, you ride in a t shirt and cargo shorts and if you do wear spandex shorts then you wear a t shirt to cover the spandex...At first the girls are kinda weirded out but after a few days they start asking you about the legs and my girlfriend of 6 months has seen me with both shaved and unshaved legs and hates the thought of me letting the leg hair grow out. Hey if you don't shave your legs I don't care but if you show up at races like that, look around and I think you'll see that your outnumbered by guys who do shave. Not only that but I've seen guys made fun of for it and looked at as the sunday afternoon type of rider. I'm not saying what you should do but I am speaking from personal experience and hope you can do the same....peace

Sorry Lance,
nothing you say can convince me to shave my legs. It really is a creepy thing to do.

Well I shave... and oops..... I got road rash.... I am just wondering how being "hairless" would make you not get an ouchie??? if you truly thought about it, would it not be the other way around... to be completely hairy!! to act as a shield from that awful PAVEMENT that is coming right for you!!!

shaving doesnt prevent owies.

it helps them heal faster and it makes them easier to clean up

I ride Road ,Mt,swb bent, and Screamer tandem;(not at the same time) And I shave my legs for last 15 yrs. Reason,I'm a cyclist and my wife thinks I have the sexiest legs she's ever seen! Enough reason for me.

My girlfriend wont let me shave my legs :( I did before we met and liked it. It's a mental thing more than anything else. To me anyway.

But as far as the ouchies. Like it's been said before... it's easier to bandage a non-hairy area than a hairy one. Plus there's less surface area around the wound to hold onto germs.

Why do you think surgeons shave an area before an operation?

Anyone remember the first time they shaved their legs? I remember trying to go to bed that night and I kept rubbing my legs together like a grasshopper.
