Bicycle Mechanics - How hot is "too hot" for bike storage?

Hello all,

My wife and I are long-time indoor spinn-ers - did it mostly for exercise, and after our move to Phoenix AZ, decided to take the plunge and purchase some road bikes.

We have a small place, and would like to store our bikes in our garage. Problem is, it reaches 120 during the day in Phoenix, and probably hotter in my garage. Could this be a problem?

She has a carbon frame, I have aluminum - and while I'm concerened abou the frames, I'm concerned about the entire bike, as I am still learning my way around the mechanics.

Thoughts?

I've never noticed a refrigerated truck dropping them off at the bike shop.

I think there are better things to worry about. I can't think of a thing that would be very adversely affected, except perhaps a classic leather saddle.

The problem is when you grab the metal parts of the bike and your skin sticks to the metal after it gets singed. Thanks to the hot Phoenix weather in October, I gave up smoking in 1980!

I've had my Takara road bike hanging in my storage shed since the early 90's, I inherited it from my uncle that passed away in 1990. I take it out once in a while to ride and have not had any issues with it except the tires and any rubber parts drying out(brake pads, tires, bar tape...), the seat has no issues.

Tires, tubes, leather, wraps, and pads...

Stuff that gets aged or brittle with extreme heat or cold or frequent swings between both.

Like others have said, I dont think it would be an issue either. Just expect the rubber pieces to need replacing at shorter intervals, and pay greater attention to lubing the bike.

As some posters are also bringing up, the heat and UV when you leave the garage doors open or if there are windows in the garage will destroy your tires and rubber components over time. Cable housings will most likely shrink and brake pads will dry.

My brother once kept a BD bike in his garage for a few years without riding & when I went to pick it up it looked like the tire melted into the floor. Of course this was in Southern California where the sun is relentless.
