Hi All,

What a great discussion group! I am in Long Island, NY - Stony Brook to be exact. Since my work place (Symbol Technologies) is only 7 miles from home, I figured I would try commuting by bike. Tommorow will be my first ride. I bought a specialized Sirrus A1 Sport from Brands in Wantagh. So far its a world of a difference from my 20" Huffy I had back in HS.

Looking forward to a great summer of riding and hoping to get aquainted with some local cyclists too.

Eldho Kuriakose.

Welcome to the Forums. You picked yourself a good bike. Isn't there one of the state colleges in Stony Brook? Seems they used to be in the papers alot a few years ago.
You'll find a lot of commuters here from all over the globe. Hope you'll offer opinions and ask questions, we're a pretty congenial group considering the diversity of our members.

Welcome to the forums Eldho! How long have you had your sirrus? I know there are quite a few members here from NY, and even more with the sirrus line of bikes.

Hi,

I just got the Sirrus on Wednesday. I was planning to ride yesterday (thurs), but the rain got to me. So Today was the inaugural ride ! It was far less of an effort than I had thought it to be. In fact, I feel more energetic now compared to when I drive in with all the traffic signals and slow moving trucks to deal with.

Today it took me about 35 mins to cover 8 miles. My goal for now is to do it in 20. Other than a slight tightening of my ab muscles and my thigh muscles, I don't really feel like I worked out. Maybe I got too good of a bike for my terrain.

Eldho.

Don't worry, you'll feel it soon!

Hi Etychus,

Welcome! I just got a sirrus myself. Looking forward to trying it today on a long ride. It sure seems like an awesome bike.
Have fun,

Hello all. I'm also considering this bike. I live in NYC and need a bike that is fast as well as able to handle the ups and downs of a sidewalk curb.

I've been looking at these bikes but haven't rode on them. They are:

- Jamis Coda
- Specialized Sirrus
- Jamis Nova & Aurora

I'm not sure what's good or what's not. BTW, how much did you guys get the Sirrus for? Is there room for negotiations at the local bike store?

How do you like it so far? Do you think it will be able to handle city riding abuse? Have you gone on dirt roads yet (ie. parks, baseball fields, etc.), how does that bike handle on that?

Thanks :)

Cadd,

I paid 499 for the Sirrus at the LBS (which was a bit over my budget, but oh well). They were going to give me a better deal, though I don't know how much, until they found out I was returning a bike I had bought from them a week before and exchanging it for the Sirrus. They had signs everywhere 'no returns on bicycles' (which of course I didn't see before) so I didn't want to press the matter.
I think it will be fine on city streets (that's where I've been using it mostly). It might not be the best off-roader, but I have ridden it through grass without a problem. I really haven't taken it onto any trails or anything like that yet.
I like the bike a lot. I hadn't seen much around here in that price range, everything else was cheaper (which I initially was considering) or much too much over for me right now.
And it doesn't have the twist-grip shifters, thank goodness (those really got on my nerves on my old bike).
OK enough said I guess!
I'm not an expert so hopefully someone else can add something that might be more helpful to you.
Brian
