Any know if the 9spd deore xt shifter set had a trim-able left (front) shifter?
If not, is there a recommendation for a set of 9sp, shimano compatible shifters that do have a trim function?

You could use a micro-adjust SRAM grip shifter on the right side. The bike would be a bit goofy looking with two different shifters but you'd get the function you desire.

The whole point of Rapidfire STI's is that you click into gear, and you don't need to trim. If you have the need to trim, you have a badly set up front mech. As DD notes, you could use Gripshift, where you have more of an option, but you have to ensure you get a compatible version.

Yup. No rapidfire ever had a trim. A design flaw, IMHO.
Edit: As mentioned above, some Sram gripshifters have 'trim' (multiple clicks per gear) on the front. The other option would be to go with a set of Shimano bar-end shifters with a set of barend-shifter-top-bar-mounts like Paul's Thumbies. Then your front shifting would be friction. This would be my preferred option.
