So I scored a cheap 06 katmandu for $70, problem is it's missing the rear D and both shifters and a front brake. What do I need to convert it back into a useful multi speed, how much will it cost and how do I tell what parts are compatible. Here is a current parts list of how it is set up. Any help is greatly appreaciated. :thumb:

-Sun rims Ditch Witch rear rim(disc brake compatable)
-Sette single speed hub conversion
-Surly chain tension-er
-Kenda Kiniption rear tire
-WTB seat
-sr suntour crank
-strong metal park pedals
-sr suntour adjustable shocks
-amoeba borla 6061 aluminum stem and bars
-G-Force headset with new bearings
-shimano rear v-brake lever
-radius rear brake arms
-CLC aluminum front rim(new tire included)

How do I turn a cheap old single speed bike into an expensive old multi-speed bike?

Chain, freewheel, derailleur, shifters, front brake for openers. Shifters pretty much have to match the brand of the derailleur and have to have the same number of "clicks" as cogs on the freewheel.

If it were me and I was trying to keep costs down, I'd seriously think about keeping the single chain ring and swapping the rear wheel for an internal geared wheel.

You also forgot to mention, you most likely need a front derailleur and crank set with multiple chain rings. Plus, a new chain.

If the conversion was done properly the crank arms are probably shorter than on a standard bike, so they could prove to be an issue.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around why someone would remove the front brake and leave the drag brake, which has far less stopping power and is really the secondary brake, not the primary brake.

I'd agree , look into a IGH , maybe wheels with drum brake hubs front and rear..
for all weather braking..

People don't have a clue about how bikes work and assume that the slightest touch of the front brake will send them flying, so they remove it because it's 'dangerous'.

I'd go with fietsbob and Steamingalong- use the opportunity to build up a bad-weather bike. Drum brakes front and rear with an IGH. No new chain, crankset or derailleurs would be required.

Weird. I've been converting bikes to singlespeed for the last six years, converted at least a dozen if not more, and never changed the cranks to shorter ones.

According to you, I've been doing it wrong all along.

265214265215265216 Here is the bike in question, the crankset has 3 rings and no bash guard. Also when im coasting there sounds/feels like a knock in the crankset....... The main reason I like and want t redo this bike is because the frame is 12 -13.5 inches which is perfect for me being under 5ft
