Foo - Tell me it will be all right

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The e-mail servers have gone down five times this week. I'm the one that answers the phone and has to tell our 500+ users that "we're working on it." "No, I don't know when it will be fixed."
If our e-mail servers go down again today, I'm going to dropkick a computer. Even if that computer is not responsible.

Ask them to email you a trouble ticket
Sounds like a good time for the phone system to encounter 'technical difficulties' :innocent:

I could... I could put strychnine in the guacamole.
Tell them that you are getting an error code of PC LOAD LETTER and that the Bobs are working on it. Offer them some shrimp shooters.

Send an email to everybody telling them to email you instead of calling... hee hee hee.
Or stop answering the phone after the 19th call and go tell all of the admin assistants what the deal is in person. They can in turn tell everyone else.
Obviously, if you are in a large place, that won't work, though.

The cloud screws it up, too, Couch. Just ask Amazon.

The last time this happened, I just set our voicemail greeting to explain that we know there is an outage and forwarded all calls to our voicemail.

System/360, the one, the only, the original.
When I was at Vandenberg, one of the software safety guys I worked with was a coder for IBM on the System/360 a looooooooooong time ago.

System/36. I had an emulator running on a 400 at my last job. We phased it out with a JDE OneWorld implementation on a Windows platform.
Now, I run iSeries at my job.

I sometimes feel like we run Windows NT 3.5 on our servers.

One of the computers I worked on was on display at Epcot (some sort of 3B system). That was before most people had home computers.
At that time, I was doing plastic packaging (injection molded) for IC chips. All the production machines used ceramic for the WE processor, so my work was R&D only. I also worked on the first megabit DRAM package in the world. I believe that was a 20pin DIP, but there were moisture problems in the packaging. So all the early copies were also ceramic packages. Then the Japanese took over the market.

Also not a bad plan.

Talk about a step down.
