General Cycling Discussion - thighs of steel - arse of ice!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Any recommendations for thermal wear for girls would be much appreciated - I'm getting cold after approx 2 hours cycling in New York area and it's only going to get colder!

Hello Mazza,
Working on the principle that what keeps me warm should keep you warm. Reading your post "getting cold after 2 hrs, I would presume your base layer, layer next to your skin must be cotton, which retains your sweat, when the wind then hits you your body temperature drops. I always wear a polyester base, Altura do a relative cheap T-shirt, go for the long sleeves one. This is known as a wicking layer, its purpose to draw your sweat from the body and spreads it over the T-shirt to evaporate the sweat. This keeps your skin dry. On the top of that a fleece to insulate the body heat and a cycling jacket is essential as this will be the wind breaker and it will also be breathable allowing the moisture to pass the body allowing sweat to dry out, so the combination of wind & sweat does not drop your core temperature. On the legs I wear my waterproof as they cut the wind and being breathable do not let the moisture build up. 70% of body heat is lost through the head, so I wear a balaclava, drop it down in the real cold, or fold it up as a cap when not so cold. Gloves also are essential, if your hands feet and head is warm you can cope with the rest.
If you knew all this then sorry for this idle chit chat and if you only wanted to know what thermal wear for girls then I can not help as I never got cold enough to wear thermals using the above procedure.
There are more opnions on this forum, here is just one link, hopefully after reading them you will be warm as toast on a freezing day. Tell us what worked for you. :)

Go to Toga bike shop and get some Craft base layer. Are you already wearing some windproof and water resistance jacket? If not, try some from Pearl Izumi. For the lower body, you can't go wrong with the Pearl Izumi AmFib tights. Bicycle Renassance seem to have a lot of them, though they don't have any size for men. While at Toga, pickup some Craft light to medium weight wool socks.
Thanks for advice - had already purchased some Triflex gear from Performance - sadly I don't think I'll be out this weekend to test drive the new gear- somebody said it might snow!!!
