Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Owing the fact we have loads more new members (welcome one and all), and that this thread was pretty funny last time it was run, I thought it'd be a good idea to see how our community would work in real life (part II)...

Imagine we're all on an Island..plenty of sustainable food and water available....our own Rocky Mountains (ok, plus roads), North Shore areas, scenic valley areas for all tastes and pallets.

We've built our village, but who's doing what? Over to you....

As before, I've got my own small seaside coffee and muffin shack...dishing out all the coffees and muffins you could think of to tired and hungry cyclists.....

What would you be doing on the Island?

Rich

I would like to take some time off, and be the town bum. I would hang out at Rich's place getting fat on muffins, and playing darts with the rest of the gang.

I would like to be the community cop (or one of them), who just rides around on his spanky MTB going WOOOO WHOOO. I would stop at all the cafes and scoff muffins and donuts with Joe and the gang.

Hopefully there would not be any work to do whatsoever. :) There would be no traffic accidents involving cars, and no bike thefts to deal with because we would all have bikes. :)

Sorry I forgot to say no motorised transport was allowed ;)

Frame and wheel builder. I'd need to learn how first, but if i was living on a island and could do anything i wanted, that'd be it.

I'd be baking the muffins! (Might need some tuition on this one though. ;) )

Ok, I'll be the one who reads books and stares into the distance a lot.

I'd be the guide. Having ridden every inch of "road" and path multiple times, I would be the ideal choice to make recommendations to the others on which path to take and to organize group rides! :D

I guess I am a little full of myself today

Wrench.

I've been realizing that I shouldn't have gone to university for all those years; I shouldn't have been a professor or a writer; I would have been much happier being a bike shop wrench.

If our village had a jail, I'd probably be in it.

I would be the Island's vintage nerd. Riding cool souped up vintage road and mountain bikes, wearing cool vintage jerseys and Swobo stuff. But I woud be able to spank anybody on their fancy bikes with fancy clothes.
Plus, I publish the best darn cycling magazine in the whole freaking world!!!
I would have a donut and capuccino shop, with alot of bike stands and plenty of tools and spare parts. So cyclists could stop by, buy a magazine, eat a few donuts, drink a French Vanilla, and work on their bike and talk cycling.

I'd be the Dive instructor, and divemaster to the
local reefs. Man doesn't live on cycling alone.
Wrench would be good, but we've already got
plenty of those.
maybe build/sell audio equiptment (mostly tube stuff)
I'm not just retro with bikes.

I'm a Potter (you know, clay, spinning wheel, makes cool stuff from Mother Earth) from my college days and still dabble in it. I'd love to create the plates and cups and bowls for the coffee and muffin shack. I'd use locally found clays, natural glazes, and a wood-fired kiln. All natural stuff. No tacky cheap china or paper plates.

While the clay is drying, I'd be off riding of course. Also like Chewa I'd read all those books that I never seem to have time to get to. And of course stare off into space and contemplate the future.

I'd be the local supplier of material for bike frames and have a custom frame building shop. (BTW I'm a CNC machine programmer for a steel company, its a mechanical engineering career field). I'd hope to have a good sales staff to buy the material from a supplier and sell the material to the frame shop. And have a good engineering dept. to design the frames, under my direct supervision. And a awesome manufacturing dept to build the frames. I'd sell them to the LBS to be turned into finely tuned machines. This business would design and build all types of bikes for all types of riders. Remember these would be custom built. Anyone need a job and are skilled at what they do?

I'd manage the web cafe, maybe link up with fubar5 or Rich!

Hey! If we're having a cafe, then I'll bring my guitar by when I close up shop and I'll play soulful blues deep into the wee hours. [As we all know from bike shops, wrenches are rarely conscious in the daytime, anyway.] If we could get enough people, we might be able to set up some kind of house band...

Oh yeah, I'd hot some hot tubs also. And then a sitting room with only the finest brews on tap. In the sitting room there'd be a big screen TV but no cable, only vidoes and documentaries of past Tour De France's and other races, along with some biographies of various cyclists.

i'd have to join up with Lotek on the audio equipment thing. I'd help yall build outstanding sound systems for your huts.... Maybe start up a non denominational christian church. wouldn't want us arguing over little details.

this makes me really want to go live on an island, anybody know any for sale? Maybe we could all pitch in a couple bucks.

I own the Pub, a kind of irish pub style, lots of good live music and wonderful drinks.

And the best of all; cycles are allowed inside, cheers

Matadon
05-03-02, 09:31 AM
Well, since toolfreak has the pub covered, I'd likely run the only gourmet restaurant on the island, serving up a tasty array of dishes from all over the world. Starting with sushi, of course, and I'll naturally have to make wine...

I guess I'm also going to have to perform some community duty; as such I will take upon the tiresome burden of being the Official Island Beer Taster. :D

UncaStuart

I'd be the village piper, which naturally means I'd be exiled to a distant promentory, occasionally donning a disguise to slip into Toolfreak's pub and grumble about the lack of Talisker.

Rich

How about nominations on who's in charge?

Erm...not Joe, he doesn't want the job...how about D*Alex? :D

I would be the town gardener. Somebody has to grow the food and I really LOVE fresh tomatoes, jalapenos, corn, etc. In August when the zuchinni is producing like mad we could pave our roads with them :-)

I would spend each day riding from place to place visiting each and every one of you, eating your donuts and drinking your coffee. Since it will never rain, snow or be cold, it could be a full time job. I may even tune a bike or two every now and then, and crank and crank and crank, day after day after day. Maybe the donuts should be bagels.

Well, since no one else has offered, and since I have my General Contractor's License, I guess I'd be the builder.

I guess I would have to specialize is coffee shops and cafes, but that shouldn't be a problem!

I only request the following:

NO PRACTICING LAWYERS ALLOWED!
NO PHONES!
2 Day workweeks and 5 Day Weekends!

hmm i dont drink any alcohol, and i try not to drink much coffee so i guess i could also open up a grocery store where you could get other beverages such as cran grape juice, v8 splash and the like. I could hook up with CycleT for some good fruits and veggies. I of course would carry other things such as toothpaste, deodarant ect.. I think we still need somebody to run the bookstore or library...

[i] I think we still need somebody to run the bookstore or library... [/B]

I can handle the library duties...I worked in one for a couple of years awhile back. Our Village Library would specialize in cycling, having all available bike-related books, magazines, videos, dvd's, etc. from various countries. Of course, the collection would also include the usual library stuff. It's always good to expand your mind. Would also make those pub/cafe conversations interesting...

We would also have free internet hookups so that folks can keep up with bikeforums! :)

I guess after my post in another discussion: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?s=&postid=69692#post69692 , I'll be in charge of the bike pull. Oh no! The country boy, redneck side of me is now coming out!

But seriously. I'll play trombone in the band. If you don't want a trombone, how about a trumpet? Baritone? Tuba? Marimba? Xylophone? Oh, I know what you would want! PIANO! I could teach piano as well!

Coffee shops, muffins, pubs, bike builders, grocer, musicians, etc. are all very idyllic.

I, however, will be the island medic and Keeper of the Toilet Tissue Rolls. You shall all worship me. BOOHAHAHAH! :p

With my past experience I'd set up the village radio station.

I'd play great riding music and give reports on riding conditions across the island. The only ads I'd play would be for the muffin shop, restaurant and other 'island businesses'.

I may even spend the occasional Sunday preaching in AutoAudio's church.

I'll work part time as a wrench, part time in the bookstore, part time in the classroom teaching Drawing and painting, part time as the resident poet who doesn't write poetry and I'll be damned if I'm going to live on and Idylic Island Utopia with only three wonderfully delightful women! ...so I guess I'll be a parttime commuter also.

I'll be the undertaker. I've always wanted to be an undertaker. We're going to need one with all these people dying from malnutrition after trying to live on a diet of coffee, muffins, beer and donuts.

Anyone know how to carry a coffin on a bike?

In my spare time I could be the village idiot, bringing amusement to the people with my demonstrations of new and astonishing ways to fall off a bike.

When I'm not doing that, I'd like to join Velocipedio's band. I play a wicked comb and tissue paper.

uhm...yea.
05-04-02, 05:50 AM
There's something wrong with that diet? Hmmm, maybe THAT's why i'm fat and lazy. Oh, and since i didn't see anybody else with this, my frame shop will be a "everything else for cycling" shop as well. Otherwise we'll all be mail ordering the parts for the frame we bought at the several frame shops that seem to have turned up. :p
