For me it is what was called a "Sloppy Joe" in Bernards Township in north New Jersey and specifically in a small Deli on the southwest corner of the downtown square in Basking Ridge, NJ, and it bears no resemblance to the gooey ground beef concoction that most people call a Sloppy Joe. It is though currently sold as the "New Jersey Sloppy Joe" on a couple of SoCal college campuses.

It consists of two Sour Dough or Rye bread slices layered on both sides with liberal dose of Russian or Thousand Island dressing, then an 1/8lb+ layer of sliced beef, ham, and turkey, and then three slices of cheddar, swiss, and colby cheese, and finally topped with a finely chopped cole slaw.

It's simple yet complex, and just plain full flavored. I still make then at home 30 years later, but they never taste quite the same as that little deli in NJ.

OMG, I wish they had bahn mi near me. Going to Portland tomorrow, might have to have bahn mi party.

My favorite would depend on my mood, but the sloppy joe is off the list cuzza the turkey, that could never be my fave.

Sometimes Rueben, sometimes Philly Cheesesteak, sometimes Italian beef or sausage, sometimes (do hotdogs count as sandwiches?) Weinerschnitzel pastrami dog on pretzel bun, sometimes braunschweiger and mustard on white bread.

My local grocery store has a deli with a lot of decent food, but most of it is nothing spectacular. However, they have a Southwest chicken panini and when it's hot of the grill it's easily the best sandwich I've had. Unfortunately (or fortunately for my wallet) they don't make them very often.

wut? There are still 350 schlotzskys nationwide, though I do acknoweldge they aren't quite the same after being acquired:

They do make some killer sandwiches. Still, my fave is a local place that makes killer turkey melts. Excellent bread, bacon, turkey and thousand island - how can you go wrong??

Steak American (smash sandwich) in Toulon France, sold by street vendors. Eaten while drunk, in the 80's, while in the Navy. It's how I discovered that I love dijon mustard.

A Philly Cheese Steak- I'm still searching for a good one. Wife and I have aspirations of touring at least the lower 48 in a decade, so will have to make it to Philly for a real sammich.

If we're talking burgers, we'd best start another thread...

I ate a homegrown mater sammich on white bread with mayo the other day. Half a mater, salt, mayo. Eaten over the sink so the juice flowing down my elbows didn't make a mess.

Killer.

Or was it the 'Pescado" from Sammy Green's the next day. Fried fish, hot sauce, tarragon mayo, house baked sour dough roll.

Excellent.

Or the Publix supermarket brand Tarragon chicken salad on a baguette I had the next day. Hit the spot! Added some home grown patio tomato slices.

a few weeks back
I had a club on a croissant from a grocer near me that was like dirty sex on a napkin.
Every now and then, they get it right. But saying which one is the best one, just remembers which one I remember at the moment. I can think of another in cali, that I couldnt help but sit there for a moment afterward.

Best open face hot roast beef I've had was at the Five Point in Seattle, hard to put open facers in the same league with other sandwiches, though.

It was a 'bacon' sandwich at I. Fratellini in Florence, Italy. The place was literally a hole-in-the wall sandwich shop. Fantastic little sandwich.

It was a barbecued pulled-pork-shoulder sandwich. It came complete with some bangin' BBQ sauce liberally poured on top of the cole slaw which covered the meat. This masterpiece of a sandwich was encased by sesame buns. Boy was that Yummy!

I bought that sandwich at 12:30 am early one Saturday morning on the other side of town where somebody said, I wasn't supposed to be...

Triple decker pastrami, corned beef, and tongue topped with cole slaw on rye. Cooked perfectly, just enough fat for flavor. Kosher dill pickle on the side. I almost cried when I finished it. A masterpiece that was ephremal. Too beautiful for this world.

For me its an In-and-Out Double-Double Protein-style (lettuce wrappped with no bun), or a Four x Four (four 1/4lb burgers and four slices of cheese) if I am REALLY hunger. Since I left California and Las Vegas I have had a constant jones for one......
They also make killer fries and their secret is using Kennebec potatoes. Shhhhhh..... :innocent:

I did not realize that. I was told that they were sold for over $10 million dollars...for a single store that closes at 12:30 everyday.

OK so this is going to sound weird and really white trash... while visiting my sister's family in N Carolina, they took me into Charlotte and at this really divey place, ordered up FRIED BALONEY SANDWICHES (artisan white bread, slab baloney, Best Foods mayo)... best sandwich ever and I still crave it!!!!

I don't think I would eat a fried bologna sandwich if they paid me, but I have a Hawaiian friend who makes a mean fried Spam sandwich that has a slice of grilled pineapple and a killer Sriracha and pineapple chutney spread on a grill toasted bagette. I normally don't like Spam at all, but that sandwich is just awesome!

My thought exactly but then... I was served this heavenly delight and fell in love immediately.

FYI... grew up on Spam... Can't stomach it anymore....if nothing else, way too salty! Actually will probably never have a fried baloney sandwich--- it sucks getting old and having diet restrictions!

Yesterday I was at our county fair and had a deep-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich sprinkled with powdered sugar and chocolate sauce.

It was pretty darn good, but I suspect this is what killed Elvis.

I'll go along with that... vastly different taste that what we westerners often expect from a sandwich... we have some pretty good shops around here. I especially love the inclusion of a bit of hot Serrano pepper and using soy sauce as a dashing condiment.

I think my next favorite was a Rubin I had years ago.

I love just about every type of food item that I have tried from Vietnamese cuisine, and especially their coffee and Sriracha chili sauce (although Sriracha is actually a Thai-based chili sauce which has been developed and marketed here by David Tran, who is a Vietnamese expatriate). The French influence in their culture takes the Vietnamese cuisine to a completely different level from most Chinese influenced foods. The Banh Mi is really just the Vietnamese version of a grinder or sub, but by using the Vietnamese-based fillings and spices it is transformed to something truely unique, and then each restaurant adds its own character to the sandwich as well.

The best one that I have had here in Indy is the Banh Mi & Pho at the Saigion Restaurant and second would be their BBQ pork Banh Mi, but the best Banh Mi I ever had was at a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant in Garden Grove,CA that I don't think I even saw a sign with their name on it.

The women rotated each week so we had a broad range of different flavors and dishes. Man, I miss those meals.....

In San Diego there are a couple of shops... depending where I happen to be at the time. And the irony is I am now a vegetarian, so I have not even tried the pork and other flavors... I just get egg. My wife raves about the other flavors.

The "Monte-Cristo" from Bennigans. It was a ham/roast beef, american cheese, swiss cheese sammich, all dipped in a light batter and deep fried. Along with home fries and a cup of strawberry jam to dip it in.

No more Bennigans so I settle for Shlotsky's.

If anyone happens to pass through Indianapolis I very highly recommend a visit to Goose the Market (http://goosethemarket.com/) on Delaware (25th St.) about a half mile east of N. Meridian. This place is unreal! From the delicious smoked, cured meats, and fresh and aged meats of all kinds to their unique and arousing artisan cheeses, fresh produce, and amazing fresh-baked breads, these peoples build some of the best sandwiches money can buy. Its kind of like an old school Deli/Butcher shop when you walk in, but then you realize that it is actually World-Class gourmet food and wine shop with a very casual character. Their Batali sandwich, Goose sandwich, Cray sandwich (beef heart!), inhouse cured olives, Mexican Chocolate Chipotle Raspberry Gelato, and an awesome assortment of beers and wines will change your life forever. I promise you! Just mention Goose the Market to anyone who has been there you will see their knees weaken, and Gourmet magazine even rated it as the number 1 sandwich shop in America a few years ago. Just Google it and read the reviews (http://www.yelp.com/biz/goose-the-market-indianapolis).


Another interesting sandwich shop that I take everyone who visits from out of town here and everyone leaves full and smiling. Jersey's Cafe (http://www.jerseyscafe.com/) on N. Meridian (Hwy 31) just south of W. 146th. The service can be a bit slow here (but its not usually) because the place is small and it is usually packed. They have the largest selection of New Jesey/New York/Philadelphia-inspired sandwiches (I count over 100), salads, and soups that I have ever seen. Guy Fieri reviewed Jersey's Cafe for Diner, Drive-ins, and Dives last year and it caused such a buzz that the Cafe was closed the following day because they had literally run completely out of food!

Ksandwiches is right near Genesee, which runs south from Clairemont. Either place is easy to find if you use Google maps.
