I bought a frame recently, lugged steel, it had been repainted. I'm trying to ID it. the only marking I can find is on the seatpost clamp which is 8 circles touching edge to edge. It seems really familiar to me but I wonder if it might be just a generic olympic ring type marking. Sorry I can't post a picture at the moment. Any guesses?
thanks.

I don't know if yamaguchi ever made anything lugged, but does it look like these eight circles? er, 9 I guess, counting the center.

well, they're all in a straight line so I dont think thats it. of course, there isn't alot of room on the clamp, it could be that they might normally appear as some sort of fair curve.

post a picture of it.

All of his earlier bikes were lugged. He used to make only bike in steel. His motto "steel is real" with his lab rat.. Just recently he changed to other materials.

You might try posting over in the Vintage/Classic forum. There's a few guys there that really know their stuff.
3Rensho (SanRensho) used to have a similiar design but it was
at headtube above the HS races, and they were more defined
circles. . .
can you get a clearer shot? its a bit dark.
thanks,
Marty

Can you post a pic of the whole bike? The dropouts, lugs, and construction detail can sometimes be helpful to identify or rule out a builder.

here are some better pictures.
I think the clamp is the key, everything else looks pretty plain. note the big fat brazeons. Ignore the bars. it's been repainted.
I'm posting this here because I figure there's as many or more people that know old frames here than in the vintage forum. instead of fixed and singlespeed forum it could well be called frame and hub forum.
