So is there any defensablereason for bikecops to be allowed on the sidewal when regular bike riders/cyclists are prohibited?
In my municipality this is the case, and it irks the ****e out of me, especially when I'm just as safe and mindful as them.

Well if the cop is actively trying to prevent a crime or chasing a suspect then I have no problem with them riding on the sidewalk, against traffic, whatever. If they are doing it because it's convenient, well...
In Portland, I've seen motorcycle cops racing down sidewalks downtown, endangering pedestrians, in their seemingly never-ending effort to harrass Critical Mass.
Cops in cars run lights, turn right on red when they're not supposed to, speed, etc. even when they don't appear to be in the process of actively pursuing a criminal.
Why should bike cops be any different?
What does the local ordinance against bikes on sidewalks say?
Take a picture/badge#/bike or moto# and send it to the top cop.
repeat.
Sooner or later, the guy will called in for a safety review or he will miss a promotion.
You'll never directly see the result, but they do happen.

It's easier for them to flirt with chicks while on the sidewalk.
Not quite bike related, but I recall one time on a visit to Chicago, watching several cops on 4-wheelers racing each other through Grant Park. I estimate they were going 20-30 mph, which is pretty fast for a busy urban park. Judging from their jovial demeanor and frequent swerving, I don't think they were in hot pursuit.
Anyone from Deerfield, IL remember the 'Greenie Meanies' of the 1980's? They were the bike security force who wore green uniforms and rode green road bikes. Not cops, just security cyclists. I swear they used to pick on me. I was only 12. Didn't they know I was often late to school?
