On last weeks Ft. Lauderdale urban Meet Up ride, my bride of 38 years and I were caught speeding along A1A on the south end of Ft. Lauderdale beach. It's a great pic, captured by a professional photographer from the Sun Sentinal, a local paper.

Joy and I "flying" up A1A last Tuesday night.

Great pic, but unfortunately it was taken as the result of a tragic accident the past weekend. Two cyclists were killed when involved in an accident caused by two low lifes trying to escape police. As a result the local paper came to our Tuesday night Urban ride and shot lots of pix and video. I was quoted in the subsequent article, but the spelled my name wrong and got my age wrong. They also didn't quote me exactly. :(

We did the ride again tonight, but it got cut short when, just about the same place this photo was shot, a cab cut off several of our riders, resulting in the lead rider crashing into the passenger's side of the cab, shattering his helmet and tearing up his left leg. If we weren't so slow going up the hill, we might have been there a few seconds earlier.

And in a twist worthy of O. Henry, the kid that was involved in the accident tonight was wearing a Go Pro camera supplied by the photographer to capture what happens on our rides. Had they come this week, the would have it all on "film."

Agreed, awesome photo regardless of circumstances...

As far as the reporter getting it wrong, ask 100 people who have been interviewed and seen the result and 100 people will tell you they didn't get it "quite right". Those are usually just issues with poor interview & note taking skills and creative license on the part of the reporter and subsequent editors as they "tweak" and wordsmith the copy. Usually nothing malicious, just good old-fashion hack journalism and reporting where over time the literal definition of a "quote" has been lost.

We wear helmets, gloves and bright clothing. I, as captain and by myself on my solo bike, have learned how to get along with normal traffic. It's the unpredictable drunk drivers and drivers running from cops that scare me, and your post reminds me why that is so.

Be careful out there!

Just a minor point of clarification. "Caught speeding" can be easily misinterpreted. We were "caught" on film, and while we were going fast, we were not "speeding" in the sense of "exceeding the speed limit." We were doing about 36 or so, and the posted limit was 40.

There. I feel better now.

Oh, by the way, we were coming off a big bridge. We can't do 36 on our own.

Oh, by the way, we were coming off a big bridge.

Well that explains the "hill" comment. Usually say these are "rises in the road" instead ;)

Whew! Glad to hear 36 mph was off the bridge. 36 mph on flat was a bit humbling. Sorry about your friends' brush with the taxi. I've seen that too many times. Seems like some auto drivers don't understand that bikes are actually moving and are not static.

In flat fla, anything higher than an ant pile is a "hill." I just reviewed last month's rides, and my total climb for 0.2% Honest.
