Foo - Barking dogs at night

If you own a dog and live in a neighborhood, do us all a favor and bring that thing in when it starts barking. I am so sick of listening to dogs across the neighborhood bark all night. If you are one of those owners, you are an inconsiderate a-hole and do not deserve to own a dog. If you want a "hunting" dog that for some reason absolutely needs to stay outside 24 hours a day (one of my a-hole neighbors told me that when I asked him at 11pm to kindly bring his barking dog inside), then move to the country. I hate nothing more than inconsiderate, oblivious people who care not for their neighbors and refuse to live like civilized human beings.

Sorry, had to rant. The dogs in my neighborhood are driving me crazy.

Been there brother, I had a coo-coo clock poodle that would bark itself silly on the hour and half hour. came close to dragging a twinkie on a string to lure the cute little guy into the coyote trails across the street. close.
some police/cities take noise complaints seriously now because it generate fee revenue.

Depending upon the laws in our area, you may have more rights than you think. In my locale, a barking dog that yaps more than x-times per hours is considered a public nuisance and I am allowed to abate that disturbance. Including going into the neighbor's backyard and smacking the dog. Not that there's any dogs within 1/2 a mile, but I like to keep up on the legalities.

There are also homemade remedies. Make friends with the dog by talking to it and randomly giving it bacon. After a while, all you have to do is tell it to stop and it'll run over and wait for treats that it may or may not get. This is the "variable-schedule of re-inforcement" concept in psychology. Works great for humans too. ;)

My dogs have taken to barking at odd hours at night. I close the dog door so they can't go out when it happens as I don't like being awakened at 2:00 am either. The cause of their barking as it turns out is one of my neighbors outdoor cats likes to wail in the middle of the night driving the dogs crazy.:(

I live in a neighborhood where every single house has a dog except us. Fortunately, no one ever has their dogs outside (I wonder where they go to the bathroom?). Anyway, I never, ever hear them. I only know there are dogs because I see them in the windows of the houses as I walk down the street.

It is ridiculous in my neighborhood. We also have coyotes all over the place. Sometimes when the coyotes make a kill and start howilng all the dogs start barking also. My neighborhood is located in a valley, and a barking dog can be heard for miles.

Our dog is an indoor dog. When we let him out to pee he sometimes barks. I have a neighbor that has called the police on us because the dog barked for a couple of mins before we let him in. The funny thing is, his other neighbor bought a little dog that barks continuously

Luckily for me most of my neighbors have dogs so I've yet to get a complaint. Not that I let them go on and on ever.

At least in Calgary last time the situation came up, animal control (or whatever they call it) was enthusiastic. A dog had been going on continuously for an hour or so before someone called. About 20 min later, sudden quiet.

It must depend on the city. I've been in another area where there didn't seem to be any dog noise regulations at all.

We had a neighbor's dog that was always barking 24/7.. and then one day they just abandoned him when they moved away. We took him in and fed him some leftover steak after we realized they weren't coming back for him, and he ended up being ours until he passed some 10 years later.

It's never the dog's fault. I just don't understand people who get dogs and then ignore them, leave them out all day, never walk them...and then let them be an inconvienence to the whole neighborhood.

Mine pretty much only when he has spotted something. Likely a coyote. I'll call him back inside.

Since he is ancient he just might lose these days. (Ancient as in pushing 20). But he still is impressive enough the coyotes don't want to test things. (Which is smart, he would last long enough for me to get there and I would kill).
