I normally live over at the C&V page.Im into roadbikes and well this is my first real 9spd casette setup

my 2 kids go to a MTB youth ride 2x a week
I built them some sweet bikes,

the coach or leader said if I want to come along I am more then welcome.

drat- I got to put another MTB together.....well lets just say I love roadbikes.
I know no history of this bike-
I picked up this trek 4500 with rock shox at the dump-the front wheel was toast but easily swapped from the other trek mtb that came from the same place.
stripped down the 9 speed casette and cleaned every cog-the smallest was cracked, the 13t had a chipped tooth, replaced the 11t with a spar i stole from another bike
stripped down the crankset and cleaned it also.
well I put on a new chain, grips and brake pads.
total money in the bike-maybe 20-25

first ride,- chain hop in several but not all cogs
I know enough that the problem must be in the casette.
back home now- casette is off and later I was planning to file all the burrs off of the worn teeth

the question
am I wasting my time or should I just buy a new shimano 9spd-casette for 25?
(dambed-Ill have 50 in it then!)

Skipping of a new chain on a used cassette with a correctly-adjusted, non-bent derailleur often is an indication of a cassette which has worn into an elongated chain. The "worn teeth" you see may be shaped that way to assist in shifting. It might be wise to replace the cassette before you put unnecessary wear on your new chain.

4th and 5th are just shot, you can see the edge of the teeth.

It doesn't look terrible, but I am quite bad at judging sprockets and chainrings from looking at the teeth on a picture.

If a new chain skips ubder then the cogs it skips on are worn. Filing off the upset won't cure the problem. The shape of the cog and therefore the pitch have changed. Read the bottom. http://draco.nac.uci.edu/rbfaq/FAQ/8d.2.html
