I am planning to replace the biopace chainring with a compact chanring, do i need to replace the FD to work with that?

also, the bike does not have hoods, the levers are Shimano SLR, what hoods can i buy to fit over the brake levers?

Often the Shimano SIS FD on the Biopace models for road use was a longer cage type which should fit about any modern chainring. The mountain bike and other multiuse ones might be the short cage. Try it and see how it lines up. It should generally follow the curve of the chainring, but even if it doesn't try riding with it. A lighter narrower chain could help you as well.

FD will generally work fine, actually better, in some cases.
Look for SLR hoods used on eBay, or even a set of brake levers that already have them..

My mountain bike came w/ a biopace center ring, which I replaced w/ a round one. The front derailleur works well on 48-40-28 and pretty well on 48-40-24, as long as I am careful on the 24-to-40 shift.
