I don't have the chris king press fit adapter (for installing bearing cups). My tool (any tool) would press by applying pressure to the actual bearings. That doesn't seem so bad to me since that is similar to the normal wear pressure. Anybody know different (problems installing chris king headsets without their adapters)??

you voided the warranty just by talking about an idea like that.

Never mind. I kludged an adapter together with a large steel washer/rubber washer sandwich. Tightened on just fine with no damage.
(One inch headsets have never been my friends. I splurged on a chris king grip nut since this will be a loaded touring build. I like this grip nut design. We'll see how well it holds up)

I had one on my last 1" threaded, worked well, never used the king install part, just the good old Park press, greased up the head tube and used washers to keep the bushings off the bearing race, no biggie. It will serve you well.

+1 on the big-washer approach. Putting pressure on the lip of the cups works fine. I cut a couple of big leather washers to line the pressure washers just to help protect the cup edges.
