Classic & Vintage - Cleaning off adhesive and old glue...

Well, I was cleaning up an old Hed 700 disc tubular rim that had adhesive from old tape and decals on the face. I sprayed some carburetor cleaner on a rag, which always cuts that stuff right off, and drys quick....well, the rim had old tubular glue on it, so I wiped that too, and what do you know, with a good dowse and moderate pressure the old tubular glue wiped clean off.

I know it isn't necessary, but since it worked so well, now all I have to do is ruff scuff the rim before next application!

To clean the tubular rim I use this Park Tool Citrus ChainBrite.

I pour a few ounces of the fluid in a small container, set in the bathtub.
Then, holding the wheel over the small container, I dip a paintbrush and paint the chainbrite fluid onto the rim.
It quickly removes old rim cement, or tape adhesive.
Doesn't smell so bad, kinda citrusy.

You must have a cool workshop, or you're not married :rolleyes:. My wife would kill me if I tried cleaning ANY bike part in the bathtub !

Gotta watch carb cleaner, it can mess up paint/clearcoats and reacts with some metals (it stains aluminum a dull grey) isn't really good for your health if your using it without gloves (absorbs through the skin). I use goo gone, it is citrus based, not explosive like carb cleaner, isn't harmful for paint or your general health, smells like oranges, plus it's availible in any store and has a million uses.
