Hi i just would like to no how i should train. First im training for a triatholan with a bike that is somewere around 21 miles. I am also hoping to do a centruy this summer so i would be training for that aswell. I would like to get anywhere from like 50 miles - 100 miles a week to start cause i will still have school and track. I will be able to ride most weekends alot and some on most school days depending on weather and homework situation. Then after schools out i would like to do somewhere in bettween 75 miles - 150 miles a week. I will be able to ride alot almost every day then. What would be a good way to set up a training workout. I was thinking of starting around late march eary april because of snow i can't ride very much until then. The triatholan is in eary June and the Century is in mid July. Thanks for every thing.

i have the same problem with school and all, but my season is coming much sooner than yours. in tri's, your looking to set a steady pace for the whole duration, you don't need explosive efforts like in road racing. that said, i would start off with base miles that aren't that fast, but are loger endurance based rides. i am assuming that you are in decent shape since you run and all, so after your muscles get used to biking after a few rides, i would try to begin the base training i mentioned earlier. i would throw in at least one pretty long ride on the weekend. As you get closer, try to extend your miles, both your longer endurance rides and your shorter rides that are geared for speed. in the end of april, i would start doing intervals twice a week, but since you're looking for consistancy, do longer intervals (maybe 10 to 15 min) of a fast pace, but not so fast that you can't sustain it for the whole interval. make sure you recover long enough in between them, and as you get in better shape, either increase the interval time or decrease the recovery time in between them. As for the century, you just ahve to ride longer distances and make sure you hydrate and feed yourself enough throughout the ride. my friend does tri's, and just like time trials, most people tend to keep their cadence between 85 and 95 (RPM). i would also get a heart rate monitor. you can get a basic one pretty cheap, and figure out the zones and stuff on your own. i got one for X-mas and have already made tremendous progress by using it. It will also be useful in track. good luck, PM me if you wanna know anything else

"Hi i just would like to no how i should train?"
Jdog, this post is just crying out for a true "RC" answer.
However, I know of, no way to get though to someone as thick as you.
Perhaps, asking your school coach about your plans to train for cycling activities during track season would help him make a decision as to how to "re-focus" your attention in a particular training plan.

I just finished reading a book on long distance cycling (Pavleka and Burke). In preparing for a century, they show a couple schedules (one is for first century, one is for best time in a century) that start about ten weeks prior to the event. It's basically long rides on the weekends that increase about 10% each week, with mostly short rides throughout the week. I think they said that this had been published several times in Bicycling Magazine, so you might check there. The key is the 10% more each week.

Who ever moved this thank you.
I am pretty sure no one repling to your post will adequatly be able to answer your question. Even though all posters in this forum are experts. :) There are a lot of dependencies, prior priorities and personal requirements to be considered. There are many prescribed training schedules and most are good, however you still have to fine tune your training for you and your situation. The important part is your determination. Good Luck and report back with your plan.
