General Cycling Discussion - Rails to trails east coast

Eventually going to run from Florida to maine, it's about 60 percent complete here in CT. What about your state? Is it 100percent yet in any state? I love riding from here to new haven about 50 miles round trip. I know riding the road is more appropriate for a lot of us but sometimes mup riding is a good time. Are you talking about the East Coast Greenway? If so, the answer is it won't ever be completed in our lifetimes as a complete off road route.

I'm also critical of the way they spend money, as their 990 form above shows over that half of the money they receives goes toward salaries, out of $441,000 in revenue, $275,000 goes toward salaries and benefits... Horrible for a non-profit.

There are a few pieces in South Carolina along US 17 in Beaufort County and on the Ravenal Bridge in Charleston, but don't expect more funding from the state. Anything more and this thread is moved to P&R.

Not the East Coast, but here in Louisiana I'm lucky to live near the Tammany Trace, a 30-mile Rails-to-Trails dedicated bike path. Rode 50 miles round trip Saturday. To my knowledge it's the only dedicated bike path in Louisiana, except for a far inferior levee path down in Jefferson.

I look at some of these discussions about car/bike crashes and dealing with drivers, and I feel soooooooooo lucky I don't have to deal with that. Especially since in Louisiana we have a law that motorists have to try to run down cylists and pedestrians. It's the law.

I am pretty sure that funding in the state of GA has ceased. The last big allotment was used to finish and work out some kinks for the Silver Comet, which serves the Northside of Atlanta and goes nowhere valuable in a "commercial/work" traffic kind of way.

I don't see any feasible way the East Coast Greenway can enter Georgia. US 17 into Savannah over the Talmedge Bridge dumps you onto I-16 or into a very crime-ridden and dangerous part of Savannah. The next crossing, the Hollihan Bridge, is a steel decked swing span and dumps you into an industrial area. Go inland to the next crossing is I-95. Head west upstream to US 301, nice safe country road, but far from coastal.

US 301 into Georgia is a good route, follow it to Slyvania, connect to GA bike route 85 which then connects to Georgia bike route 95 (US 17 in Georgia pretty much).

Considering the Greenway already goes away from the coast through North Carolina and Virginia.....

You may know about whom Gov. Nikki Haley calls a special interest group: police, fire departments, **** crisis clinics, etc. I don't think funding for a bike path will come out of Columbia for at least two more years.

The current Bicycle Times magazine (maybe last months by now) had an article on the East Coast Greenway that you might want to take a look at.

I forgot SC170 out of Beaufort to Cherry Point has bike lanes. All of these sections have been funded on the local level without state or federal aid.
