so the ref tells me im about 30 out of 60 and that 30 riders had abandoned. Needless to say I was shelled after a little over 20 miles out of 54, nothing in the tank. I was feeling good then suddenly I glycogen bonked. I could not produce anything for the remaining 30 miles so I just spun it out as much as possible. On the final hill I cramped so bad I could barely walk. It was clear I did not eat enough. I came to the ride with fresh legs just not prepared enough in the food department also not carb loading properly either.
My question would be what kind of recovery time do you think I would need after such a cannibalistic ride. I know its typically a few days but do you think I would need more after such abuse?
Thanks.

You bonked after 20 miles ? I don't think food is the problem. Define "carb loading". You don't need anything special for a 54 mile race.
You wouldn't happen to be trolling the 33, would you ?

Well im not a strong rider so I need all the help I can get. Can't wait to become one of thos cat4 lifers.
Congrats on at least finishing.
Did you consume some protein after the race? (you always should)
As for recovery time, ideally a few hours/half-day. But it's hard to say over the internet how long it will take you to recover.

Food is not your issue, fitness is.

Ok fine lets talk about why I got dropped LOL. Not much racing this year. Went to KNOTFEST.com the night before had 5, 16 oz beers and moshed for about half of the bands for 7+ hours. Ate a whole pizza for lunch and had a burger at the show. Pretty well fed. In the morning ate 2 eggs an english muffin one banana a peice of pumpkin cake. Was going to slam some oat meal as well but kind of forgot. Drank about 16oz of OJ 1 hour before race. I was feeling real good for the first 20 some miles until it hit me like a ton of bricks.
I see a train wreck coming...
Pretty well fed? No
Alcohol in system? Fail
Something tells me if you want to be a racer you would need to take things a little more serious.
Not trying to be a d-bag just pointing out the obvious.

Hey no problem I can deal with reality. Clearly I know why I got dropped, but does being dropped relegate recovery to a level of unimportance? I would like to focus on recovery aspect please.

Also what do you mean by train wreck?

He could just be that misguided..
OP, this isn't cross, you need to treat your body right to get good results. Check out Friel's "Training Bible", specifically the nutrition chapter. You should start thinking of the types of calories you're getting before the race, not just getting a lot of them.
And as for recovery, I'll say it again: protein.
Best of luck.

And I don't think you and I have discussed this offline. Protein and nutrition are key to recovery.

Ok so what I am gathering here, is if it takes more than two days to recover from a 54 mile race then I'm doing something wrong. As in If I don't eat right it could take longer or not even happen. I am planning up to 3 days of recovery. Just wondering if there was any instance where I could need more? Thanks.
Its hard for me to stick to a training plan due to work so I kind of fly by the week usually getting in at least one hard ride per week. I realize this is not ideal but I'm not trying to be the ideal racer. Ok that's all.

depends: if you were sitting in the entire time, I wouldnt think you'd need much recovery at all. If you were in a small break, or otf/attacking, then you could be wrecked.
If you bonked Id assume a day or two would be fine, assuming youre nutrition is on point.

But you only raced 20 miles, then soft pedaled 30 miles after you got dropped. Doesn't seem like you need to agonize over recovery days. Go ride your bike some more.

After todays RR that sounds about right, didn't feel weak, just a little sore.

of your many problems, recovery is one of the least significant ones.

The remaining 30 miles were still very tough though. I did stand a lot as it was very windy on the longest leg of the course.

of your many problems, recovery is one of the least significant ones. But that shouldn't mean recovery is to be ignored. I would like to focus on one thing at a time please.
It may appear as though I am agonizing over recovery days but that is simply because you all keep changing the subject.
