Can anyone recommend a barrel adjuster which will fit a threaded braze-on the head tube of a steel racing type bike.
The barrel adjusters I am seeing on the internet all seem to be for fitment where the cable goes into the rear mech. The one I am replacing (stripped thread but only on the male screw) is metal and I would like to replace with something similar if possible.

It does not matter whether the part is made for a rear derailleur or not - the main thing you need to know is the thread size. Once you know that you may well be able to scavenge what you need from an older scrap derailleur or cable stop at a bike shop.
There are plenty of barrels available with a variety of designs.
The key is to match the thread of the fitting, or id a threadless fitting the diameter. RD barrels are typically 5mm thread, while brake barrels are 6mm or larger. I've also seen some 4mm barrels, but those are rare.
