Saw a nice looking utility bike in Quito. Looks quite sturdy and good for large loads.

I think the thing that looks like a center stand is in fact a tire rub foot brake.

Could be. A center stand on a trike hardly seems necessary. My bet (since there's no derailleur) is that theres a simple back pedal braking system as well.
