General Cycling Discussion - Eggbeater 3 with platforms or Candy 3 by themselves?

I'm looking to buy my 1st pair of clipless pedals and while most of the time I'd be riding the bike I would do so with cycling shoes/cleats, I'll still have times I just want to ride around for fun/leisure and not REALLY ride the bike hard and wear the clunky shoes. I think I will be going with Crank Brothers Eggbeater 3's or Candy 3's...but I have a question...

Would I best served getting the Eggbeaters and using one of those clear clip-on platforms for when I want to ride without cycling shoes/cleats...or would there be adequate surface area on the Candy 3's to ride without cycling shoes/cleats? I'm not looking to do anything hard/strenuous without the shoes/cleats on...just stuff like riding on flatland around the lake with friends, trips to the store, etc. wearing tennis shoes or sandals but never barefoot.

Any suggestions or feedback would be great. Thanks! :thumb:

FWIW: The eggbeater part protrudes above the surface of the Candy platform and you'd definitely feel it trying to pedal with flat bottom shoes or sneakers.

True. Eggbeaters are worse, though, with anything less than clip-in shoes. Mallets are slightly better, but I had trouble getting clipped in with Mallets. After three pairs of pedals, I sucked it up and left the Eggbeaters on, and just deal with the need for real cycling footwear.

Got it. Thanks for the feedback. I'm gonna keep looking around see if there are others besides the eggbeaters and mallets that may make for a rideable non-cycling shoe experience, if necessary...

Shimano has a model that's clip in on one side, and platform on the other. Might work for you; I like something with a little more free float.

A note about the clip-on platforms: My understanding is that you need to remove the platform before you can clip in as they act as a cleat, and the pedals (eggbeater style, anyway) will not accomodate two cleats at once. I think if you get double sided shimano-style (spd) pedals, you can put a platform on one side and still get a cleat into the other. Shimano makes the porn-stars of clipless pedals.

Im rocking Candy 3's with shimano MTB shoes and they are easy to walk in and easy to clip in and out of. Thats wat i would recommend.
