Hey all

I'm looking for some advice on headset choice for an 'expedition' bike I'm building to ride across Asia. Being budget conscious, I've picked up an On-one inbred rigid frameset - link (http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FROOVDO126/on_one_inbred_26er_vertical_dropout) - and am looking for a headset to compliment it. I am however confused by the types and sizes available. I guess it comes down to 2 questions:

1. For this type of bike, should I be looking for Threaded, threadless, press fit, integrated or any other bits of jargon? Are there signifigant pros and cons to any of this?

2. The (quite short) headtube on this frame is spec'd as follows:
Head tube: standard 1 1/8 inch steerer, 34mm head tube inside diameter

Does this mean that any headset I buy has to match both of these numbers? For example, this (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=39383) mentions a 44mm inner diameter, with no mention of anything in inches - whereas this one (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=39376) says it's 1 1/8", with no mention of a diameter in mm.

Sorry if this is a bit convoluted - it's 3am and I'm being propped up by too much coffee.

Ben

Oh also - any specific suggestions on long-lasting, decent quality 'sets which don't retail for silly money would be very much appreciated.

You just need a standard threadless 1 1/8 headset for the bike.

As far as headsets go, anything from Cane Creek with sealed cartridge bearings should last a long time and not cost a bunch of money. The origin 8 headsets are also quite nice. Another option is to check ebay to try to find a used Chris King or Cane Creek 110 headset if you want extremely nice.

Ben,

To clarify further, 1 1/8" is the outside diameter of the steerer tube of the fork that you must buy separately to go with this frame. Contact On-One if you need a suggestion. 34mm is the standard outside diameter of the headset cups to be pressed into your frame. The head tube on your frame will actually be a tad tighter than that for a snug fit.

The Ritchey V2 in your link should fit just fine, the WCS will not.

These sites explain with pictures your other technical questions....

Thanks guys - that Cane creek manual cleared things up a lot. I'll have a look at those Cane creek ones - they look pretty nice.

Top line headset can go onto subsequent frame-set buys..

[unless bike is stolen, of course] so there is that..
