Anyone else BLEEPING sick of hearing this? I'm glad there's a cycling movie coming out and all.. but does it have to seem so damn terrible?

So let's get you on point. Have you seen the ads? Do you think it'll be a good movie?

Hopefully It'll be a pretty entertaining movie, if its good and makes more people ride than thats even better. With any luck it would be popular enough to make the hipsters turn elsewhere, leaving the rest of us:thumb:

I'm looking forward to it. JGL is dreamy.

I like the cinematic portrayal of bike messengers, at least from the ads I've seen.

What I don't get is why all bike messengers ride singlespeed. they're pretty hard core, way more hardcore than jimmy johns.

Bicycling movies revenues generally suck when released to theaters and then develop a following when released on video, but this one is so limited in scope, and is about a subject that most cyclist couldn't care less about, that I think "Grind" will look like a runaway hit by comparison. I hope they had fun filming it, because I doubt that anyone will buy a new home with the money they make from it.

this movie seems to be better than most, and has one big star, so it might be good. the biking coordinator, dave jordan, died though in july :/ knew his daughter..

No idea what you're talking about at all. I haven't even seen one ad about a new cycling movie.

Two things I don't get: (1) what cycling movie, and (2) what/who is JGL? Otherwise, I'm following the discussion very well. It's like I'm at home trying to listen to my teenagers. [Blank stare; Thinking to self: don't I need to go clean the backyard grille or something...]

The cycling movie is Premium Rush.
JGL- Joseph Gordon Levitt

It's like Rad, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rad_(film)) for bike messengers.

Its not as bad as I was expecting. The storyline is decent, the directing is pretty good, the acting is okay (except for a couple people), the stunts were pretty good - some obvious CGI that mostly involved riding into and through NYC traffic, a nice Danny Macaskill type sequence, and the girlfriend is smoking hot
Now the bad: this is going to cause impressionable riders to take off their brakes, theres one messenger riding a full carbon geared bike thats annoying, the cops act like sub intelligent goofballs.
I wouldnt have paid full price to see it, but its a great dollar movie/Blu Ray purchase. If you can see it with about 30 other bikers all sitting together after having a few couple drinks, all the better

If I'm not mistaken, Danny MacAskill actually did the stunt riding in this movie.

I went and watched the movie. Premium Rush, this afternoon. I am glad I went ahead and seen it now instead of waiting on the DVD to come out. If you like lots of action and bikes you will like this movie. The only thing I did not care for was the story is told in reverse. I do not like for movies to do that. The opening scene actually happens near the end of the story. Then they show you this clock that is running backwards and then they tell most of the story in reverse.

ThermionicScott

The preview kind of does, too. FWIW, I actually like movies that do that -- "Memento" and "Pulp Fiction" would be kind of ho-hum if told in "forward" order. ;)

My wife and I saw it yesterday. Pretty fun, really. The CGI was obvious enough that, in a way, it made the action more palatable -- you knew that he wasn't about to get blasted, so the close calls didn't make me wince as much.

Plenty of cheesy lines, and I'll bet that some of NYC's messengers will recognize each other in it.

As always in American films, there's a bad guy to fight, and this one's a real a-hole. Almost comically so, but you want to see him get what's coming.

About the backwards-storytelling -- the way I read it, the story happens in real time from the pickup of the parcel to the very end (as in, the delivery needs to happen in less than 90 minutes, which is the length of the movie). But, rather than showing you footage of going block-by-block up and down Manhattan, they gave you the other parts of the story -- much of which preceded the pickup -- to fill in the gaps.

Also from the motorcyclist perspective... there was the film "Biker Boyz"... The influence lasts longer than desired, just look for how many bikes you see with chromed extended swingarms.

I just saw the movie with my son (liked it). Only the main character rode fixed gear - 'roid Manny in spandex who was pretty fast, rode all-carbon superbike with lots of gears.

Okay, my wife and I saw Premium Rush on Friday night. It's a movie for adolescents. I couldn't identify with any character except the one who is in trouble and needs our protagonist's help (not to spoil plot elements for those who might still see it). The gimmick to foresee different paths through a dangerous situation was interesting the first time - tiresome by the sixth time. The carbon/gears versus steel/fixed trash talk was needless and certainly not understood by the audience. Anyway, I would give it no thumbs up and zero stars.

American Flyers is a better movie, and it's not very good. Breaking Away is the best of the three because of its fine characterization of an intact working class family who genuinely love and support one another.

I found the movie to be lots of fun. I didn't go with very many expectations, and the previews were clearly oriented toward a teenage audience. I guess that the trailer I saw sums up what is worthwhile about the film. Some trick riding and lots of action. If you want to see the chase scenes through NY on a big screen, you better go soon. The seats were nearly all empty on a Sunday night early evening showing in my town. I doubt they will carry it in our budget theaters here. And I wonder how many people are even aware that it is out there.

Yup. Movies like this are only worthwhile on a big screen with a couple thousand watts of sound. "Twister" is my favorite example of such a movie. A lot of the real-world filming is really good and puts you in traffic in high-def, unlike than those alleycat races on Youtube.

Some of the set photos show a rear brake on his bike and a small lever near the stem. http://collider.com/premium-rush-set-photo-joseph-gordon-levitt-david-koepp/38777/

I had to delete about half the posts because they went off on a helmet tangent. Please keep this thread about the movie, and only the movie.

Any other helmet comments will be handled accordingly. Please use the report button (exclamation point in a triangle at the bottom left) and the moderators will take care of it.

Thanks for your cooperation.

I saw the movie this afternoon. It won't win any Oscars, but it's a fun summer action flick. Predictable, but fun. Think of it as a modern Quicksilver.

I agree. It was not the best movie I ever saw but it certainly was not the worst. I don’t think this will spoil anything but I liked the scenic where he handed the cop his hot dog, then back pedaled away. You sure couldn’t do that with a geared bike.

Would this movie inspire me go buy a fixie? Not a chance in ___ (put in your own word there).

I was almost inspired to buy/build a fixie. But I live in the country with about a billion steep hills. With 45 year-old legs, I don't think the relationship would work too well.

Don't let that stop you. I built mine at 52 years old, and rode it up and down some pretty steep hills. Try to find flatter rides while you gain experience and strength, though. Choose your gear-inches wisely. Maybe start in the mid-60 range to start, then go to the low-to-mid 70s later. Save your extra chain links...
