Tandem Cycling - Schwinn Twinn Sport

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

We recently purchased a 1979 Twinn Sport. I have several questions regarding the wheels used on these bikes. It seems that the front wheel hub spacing is 92.5mm, is that possible? Is that normal for a tandem? Peculiar to Schwinn tandems? Rear spacing seems to be 146mm which seems common for other tandems. I have now had the experience that others have had regarding tires slipping off the steel rims and consequent exploding tube. I have several alloy front wheels with hooked rims but they won't presently fit in the fork, could I maybe alter them to the spacing required? We really wanted to try this tandem out without having the wheels relaced to better, lighter rims. I would really like a better front hub, the rear has an Atom drum brake I would like to keep. In the long run I will probably fit Tektro long reach rim brakes front and rear and maintain the Atom as a drag brake for long downhills activated by a friction shifter.
All comments appreciated.

I don't know the answer to your question, but since you're here, is this a Schwinn?

It may be a Schwinn. Looks like hub brakes at both ends. I would bet the women are twins. There is a 1959 Ford in the background. What else do you want to know? I'm out of breath!!!

I don't know anything about old Schwinn Twinn tandems, but if you post these questions in the Classic & Vintage forums, I know there are at least a couple guys there that have (or had) them.

Photogravity,
I reposted there this morning.
I wasn't really sure where to put these questions. I had also posted them on the Schwinn forum.
Thank you for the advice!!

Hi Brian;
If the bearing cups in the hub are good, re-use the hub with a modern rim, I'd suggest a Sun CR-18 or Velocity Dyad.
