Touring - My Dawes Galaxy is sick :( Help!

Hi all,

Bought this bike a while back second hand, when buying it I had not realized the seat post was seized!

A friend of mine said he could fix it, so I trusted him.

May not have been the best idea as he had to cut it out, in doing so he left some cut marks, slight dent in the frame and
a small crack.

Bike still cycles fine only use it around town the odd time, crack hasn't got any bigger.

Problem is I want to give it to my girlfriend as were planning a tour next year.

Could I just get the area welded/fixed as its a steel frame or is it dead.

looks fixable to me. either get the crack brazed, or try to have a frame builder replace the lug, if its worth it

yeah he certainly fixed it alright don't let him anywhere near your other bikes,
you will need to get that fixed properly :(

It can probably be fixed. I agree with Altamont. Go to a frame maker.

Any decent frame builder should be able to fix it, hell even a regular welding shop should be able to fix it, brazing is not that difficult. Just make sure they drill a small hole at the end of the crack before brazing, it keeps the crack from spreading further.

Find a frame builder to fix it properly, and the bike should be good to go for many more miles. Don't fix it and it will probably fail at the most in opportune time.
