I googled it, here's the link (the above didn't work for me either...):
Tour de California race lining up for '06 start (http://sacramento.bizjournals.com/sacramento/stories/2005/01/17/story1.html)
That would be soooo interesting... Nine stages, over two weeks... Our own "Tour de France"...
BTW, it is billed as a professional stage race: "This will not be a modest race," he said. "This will be an internationally sanctioned world-class cycling event."...
Hope it'll become reality and organizers can attract some good teams... ;)

I was just talking down these lines to a friend yesterday. Telling him we needed a "Tour de" [ pick the spot ] in the US. This is GREAT! The key to a BIG start out of the box is getting team DISCOVERY. I can't wait !

Well, this WAS going to happen. (not sure how much you guys know about it) http://www.unitedtexastour.com/ The previous CEO was fired (for wasting company dollars), an new CEO came in, they blamed the cancellation on the tsunami. How convenient.
That's too bad...
big companies write this stuff off as advert....
you think they will give the $$$ to Tsunami aid now that the UTT is cancelled????

This sounds great. We will have to see what happens to this idea...

I am pretty sure this is still on. The organizers for the Tour de California worked the Tour de Georgia race to get ideas on how you handle the crowds, routes, teams, etc.

As has been discussed here before, February isn't a great time for a stage race. Scheduling around other events in Europe is tough, but the weather in February isn't too hot. You're talking climbs into snow. Gonna be hard to attract the best of the best.
From the article:
"Sacramento to Tahoe would be comparable to a typical Tour de France mountain stage," said Paul Dorn, executive director of the California Bicycle Coalition in Sacramento. "It's incredible. I couldn't do it. It would kill me, but these guys are pros and they race up the mountains."
I don't know the lay of that land, but I hope they get some pros to reconnoiter the course before someone who "couldn't do it" decides to send them off to their doom.

Why do we have this facination with Tour de? Tour de Georgia, Tour de CA, Tour de Toona (http://www.tourdetoona.com/). It is English people how about OF? I saw some other US bike race called the Vuelta de someplace and it wasn't even a hispanic region like CA, NM, AZ or TX it was like in TN.
FWIW the Tour de Toona is local to me and they have had a bunch of corruption almost killing the event as well. What is with bike racing and corrupt event organizers? :(

I'm excited about it too. Maybe I'll get a chance to see part of it next year.

Actually it IS the Tour OF California, I always thought it was a bit stupid calling it the Tour de Georgia, etc. Although sometimes Bob Roll and others have called it the Tour of Georgia, whether intentionally because they think its dumb or by accident. Its obviously to appeal to the local joe Schmo who knows only the Tour de France, its all in the marketing. Thankfully California knows it doesnt have to mooch off of some other race to hold their own. I cant wait for this race, it will be fantastic, and living in sacramento, I will definately be in the Sierra-Nevada's for the stage from Sac to Tahoe!
I like the sound of "La Vuelta de California." Very nice.
I can't wait. It's too bad that Lance won't be there. That would be just the exposure the event needs. But they're not kidding about the Sacramento-Tahoe etape, er, um, stage. Anybody remember what happened to the Donner Party? I hope they bring their Nokians!
