Hi all. I'm wondering if anyone here has experiences with using a hitch mounted bike rack on a 2012 Ford fiesta (hatchback) or other subcompact car. I generally use a fork-mount roof rack, but am looking for a hitch mounted option to use on longer drives (i.e. over 600 miles) or if its excessively windy (West TX has some decent winds, plus 80 mph interstate highways). While I could remove the wheels and lay two bikes inside (my bikes are small, like 50 - 51 cm), I know I'll start to run out of space I travel with another person, need extra gear, wheels, etc.

I've seen some options on-line and seen some etrailer videos, but looking for more real world experiences with a suitable bike rack. While I would prefer a wheel-carriage bike rack (like I previously used on my lifted Cherokee XJ) - I'm not sure the ground clearance on a subcompact would be sufficient as the road pitch changes (maybe I'm wrong). I think that a rack that is cut relatively flush to the bumper and holds bikes by the top tube would be better. That being said, I'm curious to see what specific hitch-mounted racks (for Fiesta hatchbacks or other subcompacts) are being used by the BF forums, and what issues they've had.

My wife has a 2-bike Thule rack on her FIAT 500. Works great.

i have a 2011 fiesta, either lay my bike in the "back seat" or use a saris bones trunk rack. the saris works fine, bikes are mostly in the slipstream of the car, but do get "splashed" with a lot of road grime. have carried two bikes on a couple day long drives without any problems - not gone over 70 mph. there is a two and three bike bones - have the two bike model, have wondered if the three bike model might have been more flexible, as one of our bikes is a larger size and one smaller & one needed to carry three bikes and three people (used our big car).

Hi. Thanks for the replies.

Martianone - yeah, I've thought about the Saris Bones and I've heard good things about it. Though I'm primarily looking for a hitch-mount system, the Saris Bones has definitely been a consideration, and may be the way to go. Thanks.

Demon - is the Thule rack a wheel-carrier system, or the traditional frame-support system? Also, any issues with ground clearance and the rack scraping the road (i.e. with changes in road pitch, coming down/up parking lots, etc)? If it's a wheel-carrier system, any issues with the car's exhaust and the bike wheels? Thanks.

I like hitch racks, particularly those that support the bikes by the wheels. One place with lots of hitches and racks is:

See if Curt makes a hitch for your car (probably) and if they do, go to their site to review the specific detailed installation instructions to get an idea what's involved. It's usually pretty easy to install a hitch.
