General Cycling Discussion - Alleycat Racing: A Documentary

Hi guys,

Yes, I'm new here. I actually just got into cycling. Believe it or not, I was never that big on bikes until after watching a documentary about alleycat racing. The movie is called 'Line of Sight' and it showcases the world of underground bicycle racing (the only rules: fixed gear, and no brakes).

So, what does the cycling community think about alleycat racing? From what I hear, everyday cyclists seem to have a dislike for racers, but I'm trying to understand why. What does everyone think of alleycat racing? Hate it? Love it? And why?

That's not really a documentary of Alleycat racing, it's more of a collection of scenes from several races and "cool guy" shots of Lucas Brunelle.

A real documentary would delve into the history, social issues, how/why and so forth.

I suppose I can agree.

but my question still remains. Why do people hate alleycat racers so much?

Fixed gear only, no brakes allowed was only two of the races in there, There were plenty of people on free wheelers and multi-speeds. Not a documentary, but I liked it.

I haven't got anything against fixies, though I suspect I wouldn't like to ride one. I do dislike no brakes however - incredibly arrogant idea. If you are unable to stop in time, you put others at risk.

Again, same thing applies to street racing. Put your life at risk if you want, but not others.

I love riding fixed, it's hard to describe but it's really nice. I ride with no brakes but I remain cautious, I go down hills fairly slow, I don't act crazy going through intersections because I don't feel like getting killed that way. One of the first things I practiced was stopping and I can do that pretty fast. I can also say that having both of your brake cables snap while you're going down a mountain on a loaded bike leaves something to be desired (from experience). but I understand what you're saying and pretty much agree with where you're coming from. The thing I really don't get is the brakeless bmx bikes with freewheels that get ridden around my town (with big hills), that one doesn't make sense to me.
