BMX - BMX bike for me...6'4 195. Ideas?

I was wondering if anyone out there would have some ideas/suggstions for a bike for me. I am a MTB'er (03 S-Works Epic) and would like to get a BMX'er to thrash around my backyard and relive my days as a youth on my Schwinn Predator. I will be making a small track with some jumps and whoops and just having some fun. No need for anything fancy, but I want something that will be sturdy and work well. Are 24" tires a must or are 20" possible? What am I looking for spec-wise to find a frame that will fit me? I will spend between 200-300 bucks and have no problem buying something used. I have some bike mechanic abilities so maybe building one would be an option but I am open to any suggestions any of you have.

You want a cruiser instead of a bmx frame?

Why not get one of the longer BMX frames? Many bmx racers are right in the 6 foot range and that is what a lot of the bikes are designed for.

20" wheels, 21"+ top tube, longer wheelbase. Makes it fast, light, and nimble, but remains stable in the air.

Check www.danscomp.com and take a look around - The Free Agent bikes for racing (Eluder) can be a pretty decent value if you NEVER plan to ride freestyle, and just want to do some dirt jumping... NO PEGS EVER!

The MCS Tracer Pro may also work nicely for you.

Real BMX bikes, contrary to a lot of opinions, are not all that small. Typically though, riders don't actually sit on the seat so it is low and out of the way. The bars have enough rise to put them higher than most mountain bikes and the cranks are often longer than mountain bike cranks as it is not about clearing debris as you ride, but getting a lot of torque for speed.

There are several 24" cruisers listed on Dans site as well, but they will not respond nearly as well as the 20" bikes.

Thanks BMXTRIX...I would prefer to have 20" wheels and a larger frame no doubt. I am definately looking for the bike to be nimble and quick. I am not interested in freestyling so this would be strictly a dirt pounder. I am pumped as I just bought a house with a little room in the back for some riding space. I figure I win as I can have fun riding and mow less grass!

What about a Giant Rythym they are cheap and I have oen and i use it for dirt jumps and riding around and it is fine.

From the looks of it, I need a XXXL frame (22 inch top tube) if I am going to run a 20" bike. What companies make this size frame? Does Giant make a 22" top tube frame?

You may have some difficulty finding a longer frame pre-built up as most bikes really are built complete for the entry level rider who falls into 'average' heights... Which you most definitely are not. Since I'm 5'8" I run on the other side of things in that most top of the line bikes are a little big for me.

Anyway, definitely go through eBay and search bmx xxl and ignore all the helmets that come up. There is a bike on and a frame there right now. Probably a decent price on the bike, though I haven't really priced racing frames.

You may want to get something complete brand new, then replace the frame in a few months. You can rocoup maybe 50 or 60 bucks or so if you sell the frame right away. Just tough to get a bigger ride when you are going custom... and custom isn't cheap.

I loved the process of building it and that would be something that would be a blast to do with a BMX bike. I am scared to ask, but how much would this run to do it RIGHT. Like I said, used is ok if in mint condition.

I have already been on Ebay and saw that frame. I am thinking I will need a XXXL but I really don't know. I would need to find a shop with a 21.5 and 22 to see if there is a REAL difference. I bet it will be hard to do that.

Custom... Well, done right is over a grand for bmx. But, you can be really nice for under 1000 bucks. About 700-900 really. 800? It depends on how far you want to go with things. But, you can avoid some of the things that freestyle riders really look for in a bike, and most frames cost a little less than freestyle. Not all of them though... some cost as much or more.

Just depends on the components and they can push it over 2 grand if you go crazy.
