Thanks to all who told me that Vermont was a good place to bike. I just got back from my streched business trip. The Skirack (strange name for a bike shop, right on Main Street, was very helpful and rents very nice bikes reasonable. The roads underscore the bad things I've said about Va. road design. They worked hard to accomidate bicycles. I've never seen so many bikes, all over Burlington were bikes, bike racks on the street for shopping, bike lanes and bike trails - great place.

Outside of town there were at least some shoulder (again unlike Va. - don't get me wrong I like Va. just not it's dept. of transportation). The drivers never got too close - a big issue as hard as the wind was blowing. So all was good, well except for the weather. Of course I needed practice riding in snow and rain :o anyway.

I defenitely got the impression that bikes are more common there than down here. Even though there is almost a 12 month bike season here.

Sounds like you had a nice ride in Vermont despite the nasty weather. The time I rode there it was August and the weather was beautiful except for the first morning with showers.

I wonder how the greenery and fields will look this summer since the entire east coast of the US and especially New England is having a severe drought?

Wish I could go back and ride those roads outside Burlington every summer. Cool town too! Helps that it is a college town and that the city encourages cycling. Too bad more cities aren't like that.
