****ing photoshop CS3 won't open my ****ing CR2 files. These are RAW images from a Canon Rebel XSi and a Canon 40D. WHY WON'T THIS WORK.

It tells me it "couldn't complete the request as it is not the right type of file."

Please help me before I punt my computer.

I think I need Lightroom. No. Not happening.

Was there a CD that came with the cam? I bet it has some convenient software on it.

Somewhere, I'm sure...it's a five year old camera-two different ones actually. Turns out I have Lightroom here.

Did it work before? I've never been able to open RAW files in Photoshop, but then I'm running Photoshop 7.0.

Nope, never had photoshop. It looks like I need lightroom to do it.

There is a plug-in for PS3 IIRC.

I can't find one that works. Either won't install or won't run my 40D's raw files.

I also can't get UFRaw (GIMP's raw manager) to install. Tried a couple different sources and there's always a folder missing.

I've opened raw files in the past using my cs3 version of photoshop and don't remember it being a problem.

Can you try opening them up in CS3, it might give you a hint as to what the problem is. Maybe just a minor default setting.

All I think that you should need is the specific raw file plugin for that particular camera. I'm getting updates all the time from Apple with the latest raw camera file plugin. Go looking for the plugin.

1. Try hitting the "update" button to force an update review and make sure you have the most recent RAW updates from Adobe.

2.Failing that, go to Adobe.com and do a manual search in their download area. Find the update that was adding your camera model and make sure is for CS3 (probably is).

It might not like your extension. Make a copy of one of the files, and change the extension from cr2 to raw. If they are the 'same' file type (why does cannon need to make their own version?) there shouldn't be any issue with changing the extension.
