Classic & Vintage - Introduction of a C&V fan

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi there,
Since I'm reading and learning all this stuff on the forums on 'how to do' and admiring all the stunning C&V bikes you all post up here, I might as well introduce myself on the C&V forum.
My name is Don, I like old roadbikes, based in Amsterdam where bikes are a part of life just like oxygen and H2o. I'm already thankful to the forums for the stuff I learned from you all. I have noticed you like pictures, but I have failed in posting these. Somehow my files are not accepted...
Is there an easy way of posting pics that I am to dumb to see? Would be happy to take your tips!
Cheers

Welcome, Z, a member from a very favorite city of mine.
You can either link photos from other sites like flickr OR upload them to an album on this site. Maybe you have to be a paid-up member to do the latter, I don't remember. In any case that's a good idea, cheap, removes the obtrusive ads, and allows you to post in Buy and Sell.
In the top menu bar you'll see a tab called 'Community' that you can pull down to 'Albums.' There you'll find 'create new album,' and there you go. Upload the pics there, then when you want to post one, grab the link from it and add it to your post. (This may mean having two browser windows open.) It's a little clunky and there are some things about it I don't understand, like the sizing which seems kind of arbitrary, but it does work.
Looking forward to seeing what you post, though I've a pretty good idea what it might be...

I feel welcome already! Thanks for the quick replies.
I've tried creating an album, but I get the message that I don not have access...
Think creating a flickr account is gonna be the answer.

Okay, then access to creating an album must be only to paying members. Which you may want to be, after a while.

No ads. The best part of being a member. Well, maybe second best, next to supporting this forum with a paid membership. Welcome to the forum Zieleman.
Membership = ability to post in For Sale / Wanted to Buy threads.
Free modified .hosts file = no ads (works on most of the internet BTW). Do people really surf without one of these??

Still not working... tried to link to flickr, but I'm not seeing any pics. Frustrating!
That's because your links didn't point to actual images, but rather to folders:
IMG]http://www.flickr.com/photos/85840056@N03/7863840482/in/photostream/[/IMG]
IMG]http://www.flickr.com/photos/85840056@N03/7863840482/in/photostream/[/IMG]
IMG]http://www.flickr.com/photos/85840056@N03/7863840482/[/IMG]
You need to re-do the links so they point to image files, e.g. http://www.flickr.com/photos/85840056@N03/7863840482/in/photostream/my_picture_1.jpg or some such.
Flickr:
Step 1: go to your photostream, pick the pic you want.
Step 2: Pick the size you want (the one below is large).
Step 3: Left click, copy location.
Step 4: Choose the picture icon from the edit bar above your text box.
Step 5: Select URL option, and insert your photo address there.
Step 6: Uncheck the box for retrieving file locally.
Step 7: Click OK.

Where do I find the correct URL that points to the specific image file, or how do I create it? I've tried pasting the pic name, with/without .jpeg behind the first couple of URL's.
Funny how this stuff makes me feel very uneducated

Thanks wrk101, for showing this noob the way of the interweb! Now I feel I can conquer the world... with posting crappy camera-phone pics.
Thanks to all making an effort to show me how this stuff works!

Nice! (So nice you had to post it twice, eh? ;) The edit function will allow you to delete the duplicate.)
There's an ongoing 'Show us your Dutch bike' thread where that would be a nice contribution. BTW keep your eye out for a 52cm KZ for me, would you? :thumb:

Thanks for the tip, I'll check out that thread! Saw a 52/53 ish Zieleman on a Dutch version of CL, which was advertised for about 2 months asking 250 euros. Had chrome lugs, but the colour and decals where not excepionally fashionable. Also groupset was not high-end (shim biopace or something?) It disappeared 2 weeks ago...

Welcome Don... Nice Zieleman!
Do you have other Dutch bikes in your stable?
Was that picture taken in Amsterdam-Noord?? (reminds me of an area I rode, heading towards Marken/Volendam)

Beautiful bike, beautiful country! Welcome to C&V.
Nice ride there.
Someone should nudge lotek...he is a major Zieleman fan. Lots of fans of Dutch frame builders here. I have a DeReus and a Springfield in my stable.

Hi there!
Thanks for welcoming me. These pics were taken to the east of Amsterdam, near a town called Muiden. The area you're referring to is one very familiar to me. It's called Waterland and you don't need a translation for that. I bet you also know why it's called that! I ride there whenever the wind comes from the north/nw/ne. If you like I'll take a picture there next ride.

Ah yes...the wind...quite prevalent thru the Waterland and on top of the dikes heading N..."Dutch man's mountain"...right?
Any and all pictures welcomed...I love visiting the NL!
BTW...Are you Dutch or an ex-pat?

I would love to find a proper A'dam Presto!
The Vittorio Strada MAX is my current project, and it came from our own (and your own countryman, from Alkmaar) Mel aka Elev12k. It was rusty in the chainstays but I have brazed new ones in and now I am waiting on remade decals from JR @ Velocals...then she's off to paint. A silver alloy Athena/Centaur/Daytona 11s mixed gruppo is sitting waiting patiently...

Welcome to C&V, Zieleman. I look forward to your future contributions.
I started riding on flat land — the islands in the mouth of the Fraser River, Vancouver B.C. where I grew up. The land was at, or below sea level. Dikes, canals, pumps and ditches were part of the landscape. Prevailing winds that often made one direction of the ride a grind — especially in winter. A lot of Dutch people settled there in the 50's and 60's having brought with them their large, black, Dutch bicycles. I am about to build a Gazelle, so I may see you on the "Show us your Dutch bike" thread. — Lorne

Elev12k is a legend on the web when it comes to dutch C&V bikes. You cannot google a Zieleman, Presto, Rih, Locomotief, Vittorio or whatever dutch classic without running into his nickname. I'm especially jealous of his Batavus cyclocross:
http://velobase.com/VeloImages/Cyclocross/C8FFCDC1-6C00-4DDA-B63F-93A817201ECE.jpeg
I saw him once on the Rih-tribute ride in Amsterdam. He brought his white with golden decals Vittorio. Is that the one you bought? Didn't look rusty...
Btw you asked me if I own any other Dutch bikes:

And also a steel cyclocross bike of which I do not know what make it is, but I sure would like to know, cause I'm stripping the paint as we type:

Thanks Lenton! I see you live in Japan? How's that for a landscape? Is it bike-friendly? In the Netherlands we're spoiled with bike-lanes/paths/roads. Cyclists have RIGHTS. If a cyclist gets hit by a car, the car is liable for at least 50%, even when the cyclist was running a red light or other dangerous action. Only when the cyclist was recklously 'aiming' for a collision he/she will be liable. When it's children under 14 this rule is the same but then it's 100% liability for the car. That's how motorists became bike-friendly over here...

Hey...Nice set of Gazelles. Is the "Pinarello" definitely not a Pinarello? Any close-ups of the frame details, especially lugs, brake bridge, and BB???
Mel's white Strada is still with him...My Strada MAX came off Marktplaats but Mel later discovered the CSs were rusty...2 new production MAX stays later (and a lot of fettling) and we are back in business. Mel's white Strada is going to be the inspiration for my MAX though...it is soon to be painted pearl white with gold decals...I even have some over-the-top gold handlebar tape waiting in the wings!
There is nothing like the Dutch bike culture anywhere else...nothing.

If you can get your hands on a champion mondial, do it! Over here there are lots of them, but in Minneapolis they're probably 'exotic'. Very nice frames, if I had anymore space to store, i'd buy one in my size. Preferebly with 70's decals, in white & red.
