Hi Folks,

I used to ride at least 100 miles per week year round. I rode a Paramount steel frame with Dura Ace components and tubular tires. As with many others, I let my job become my life and eventually stopped cycling altogether. I got fat, out of shape and my age caught up with me. I have recently returned. I am 57 now and am once again enjoying all the amazing feelings of cycling. On my first ride after ten years, I literally thought I was having a heart attack on a slight hill that I used to ignore. It scared me so badly that I didn't ride again for a year. I tried running but my muscles ached and I had to walk. I talked to my Doctor and decided to get off the statin drugs I had taken for many years.

I started jogging and doing light weight training. I found I could only go about three minutes without stopping to walk but I kept at it. I slowly began to regain some fitness and within a few months, I could run 30-45 minutes without any trouble. Finally about two months ago, I got my bike out, pumped the tires and hit the road. It was hard even though I had lost weight and became reasonably fit for running. I quickly noticed that each ride, I felt a little stronger, went a little faster, and rode a little longer. I am certainly not ready for a century yet but I am feeling great about my improvement after just a few weeks.

I was addicted to cycling once and I believe that is happening again. It truly feels, great riding and nothing compares to the feeling when I am relaxing after a hard ride. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. PJ from SC.

Hi PJ welcome to Bike Forums. When I was younger, I was really into athletic outdoor things as well. I got tied up with working as well and also let most of my activities go to the side. The one that I kept up with the most was martial arts. I too wanted to get back to my first love of cycling and decided to forgo the martial arts and try it again. You are right, the feeling of getting back into cycling is like no other. Needless to say I do both now.
