Got this in a swap meet yesterday in a trade for a set nice road wheels. It reminds me a lot of the 40-50s Dawes frame I have.
I am in need of the chain that comes out of the SA hub at this time.
Currently it has 53 date code SA 3 speed hub laced to 27's but it looks like it was a original 1x5 bike

Take a look at Grubb1937's photos on Flickr. You might stumble across something.

You can also do a "F H Grubb" Flickr search for ideas.

Any ideas on what kind of rear derailleur it came with and what kind of shifter would work with that braze on?
I plan on leaving it almost as it for now with the 3 speed. But it would be nice to change around later.

possibly an Osgear (http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/osgear.html) or Cyclo Ace

Very nice find in deed. The only thing to make it nicer would be to make it my size! I would think your right about the 1x5, the rear mech looks like it would be a straight pull Cyclo. There was a nice Benelux Cyclo changer on the French eBay last week. When it arrives, it well free up a really nice early 50's Huret TdF straight pull and a NOS 4spd block. If your interested PM me.
It's hard to tell whether it was made for a 3, 4, or 5 cog freewheel. They all existed and I think the 3's and 4's were more common, at least early on.
The shifter boss is probably a Cyclo, but a Huret or Simplex shifter of the period will fit equally well. I don't see anything especially difficult about the dropout (other than the hook at the front) that would make mounting a derailleur difficult. Am I missing something? I'm thinking you can use any rear derailleur with a claw.
Very cool bike. Your size?

Yep, Its my size. When I get going on it the seat post will go up for sure.
I dont mind putting normal hook type derailleur on it but since its already a 3 speed I wanna keep it as-is. But if I do go back I would like to keep it era correct to a point.

Nothing new to report except that I took the extra tape and padding off the bars. The grips and levers are staying where they are.

Boy I know how that feels. I have an old Freddie Grubb Ten Speed in The Old Shed and it has been hanging there for a few years, now. Too small for me but I just hate the thought of getting rid of it. I like the headbadge on mine but my bike is nothing compared to the OP's. Nice bicycle and great find. Congratulations!

Great score! Guess the previous owner said "shift lever clamps - how do they work?"

Yeah the cable is too short anyway for where I want to put the lever. Once I stop wasting money on motorcycles Ill get it sorted.
