I am trying to find a source for the left side dust cover for this hub. Can anyone provide a source?

Are you sure you don't mean an fh-RM40 hub? Usually Shimano hub numbers begin fh for freehub.
If you want parts for an old fh-rm40 hub, your best bet is the junk (used parts) bin of the local dealer. Tons of these were sold, and large numbers in totaled wheels. Most old school mechanics would cut the hubs out of a trashed wheel in case they needed the freehub or something, so there's a decent that an old school shop, or bike co-op can find you one (or let you mine the box yourself) and you can salvage the cover out of it.
BTW- just because it's a salvage job, don't expect it for free. If you're not a regular customer the typical price is 2 beers. Regular customers get a discount and need only pony up one beer.

My bad eyes read sh my mistake. The local shop would not look for me or let me look myself. They would replace the hub but they would only sell me a new hub and wheel because they do not order parts. Yea I am not going back there...and I cancelled the new bike I ordered.

I don't know how big a shop this was, or how they imaged themselves. This kind of request is best handled by speaking directly to a mechanic and phrased in the form of a favor. The shops that are most likely to accommodate you are what I call blue collar shops, where they sell a decent spectrum of bikes and are more focused on repairs and service. Lots of high end shops, prefer selling expensive bikes to a monied audience, and view repairs as a necessary evil.
If there's a local co-op give them a shot, or possibly someone here who works in a shop can check for the part and make you an offer. Anyone out there willing to help the OP out?????
