I have what I believe is a 1972 Raleigh Grand Prix. This morning I was riding and basically blew up the large front sprocket. It is now bent and I need to remove it. My biggest question is what is the safest/most correct way to take of the cranks so I can remove/replace the sprocket?

If it is a Stronglight or TA (not likely) crank, you need a $50 adapter to pull the cranks. Other JIS cranks a standard Park or Pedro's crank pullers will work. In lieu of that, go to Harbor Freight (http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorcycle/pullers/3-piece-two-jaw-puller-set-40966.html). Or try a LBS that handles vintage bikes.

It's a good opportunity to clean and lube your BB.

I cannot tell from your photo whether the large sprocket is integral with the spider, but I suspect from your question that it is. If a standard cotterless crank puller threads smoothly and securely into your crank, you do not need a weird-size French adaptor. If the puller feels wiggly when threaded into the crank, STOP before you damage the crank.
