Any reason not to convert a road bike?

Are you on an unlimited budget?

____asdfghjkl

Mmm....guessing my budget is around 800. probably not enough.
and I'd like to keep my road bike as is.

YOUR road bike is not what I had in mind.

Oh haha of course. I don't have another bike laying around.

looking bikes that small is pretty difficult.

Wabi Cycles come with 650c in the smallest, right guys?

I work for a Fuji and SE dealer. Fuji makes 43cm with 650c wheels in the Betsy, Declaration, and Track Classic. Not sure about other models, as those are the only ones I've seen. I can check on Track 1.0 and 2.0 if you really want. From SE, the Lager and Draft are available in those sizes. Wabi Lightning can come like that, but I think they've actually stopped making that size. I can vouch that Lagers aren't bad bikes, as I have (estimated) 15k miles on mine. A user here/IRL friend of mine has a 43 Fuji Track Classic and rides the **** out of it.

Assuming Oregon and not Maine - don't bikes grow on trees up there?

Anyhoo - on sale

I will check those out. Thanks.

and yes Oregon. Smallest bikes they usually carry is 49cm with 700 wheels way too big but Ive been seeing 45-46cm with 700 wheels and few with 650s

As jimmytango said, find yourself a shop that sells Fuji bikes.

There are two Performance shops in Portland. If there isn't an LBS that sells Fuji or SE, go to one of them. They will have/be able to get what you're looking for. Just try to support local businesses first.

I also contacted bike central around here and they had a 43 fuji track. the build is 1,500 with fitting.

They are saying that the fuji track build would come to 1500? I know city grounds has the frame for 117. I must be misunderstanding you.

Which Track? Classic? Pro? Team? 1.0 and 2.0 do not come in 43. Also, the ones on City Grounds are NOS, and likely won't be available at a shop. However, if you wanna build one yourself, http://www.citygrounds.com/fuji/fuji-classic-frame-2010-2207 is a great price on a great frame. It's the black version of the frame Misskaz has.

Crandrew
08-27-12, 12:32 PM
yeah thats what i was talking about. You could just have that frame shipped for free and then buy the componets and ahve it assembled at the LBS to "share" the wealth...

____asdfghjkl
08-27-12, 12:44 PM
agh, yes it would probably be fun to build one myself. I might do that instead. Probably gonna need people to walk me through this process though.
does the kilo tt have frames i can just buy?

calv
08-27-12, 12:47 PM
yes. go to bikeisland and look for frames, you'll see the Kilo TT's

08-27-12, 12:50 PM
actually i do have a schwinn caliente laying around. it has 24" wheels sooo i don't know what to do about that part.

just trying to figure out my options right now. mostly want to build a kilo tt or fuji track

Scrodzilla

So you're going to put 24" wheels on a Kilo TT?

mmm no. Probably find 650 wheels.

Scrodzilla
08-27-12, 12:58 PM
Unless you're really fond of pedal strike and wonky handling, you shouldn't ever use 650 wheels on a frame designed for 700c.

too easy.

I wasn't gonna chime in 'cause I thought this was handled, but.

Dude, get the Fuji Track Classic 43cm with 650c wheels. Retail is like $550 but I think I paid $450 for mine. If you can find an older frame/fork that's better, as the forks are Hi-Ten starting in 2012. Older ones are CroMoly. It's a sweet little bike, twitchy to ride but fun as hell. Mine weighs ~ 20lbs, mostly stock. I've never had a problem with toe overlap or pedal strike. I ride it 80 miles or so a week.

Being a new rider I would say that in hindsight I would want to buy a frame and build my bike from scratch. Assuming the proper research of course :) you will get exactly what you want the first time (components, fit, style), you will learn to work on the bike and at the same time add a sense of personalization to the machine.

jimmytango
08-27-12, 02:10 PM
Kaz, I hadn't realized they switched to hi-ten. That kinda blows.

A new rider probably doesn't know enough to really get exactly what he "wants" the first time and it will probably cost a ton because it is even harder to know what to look for with used parts. Yes, bikes pieced together through my own taste are a joy to ride.

Hairnet I agree with the newbie not knowing exactly what to get but, but with something like 20hrs research they could have a good list.

You really think you're going to know exactly what you want because you looked at the internet for 20 hours?

FWIW, my first three bikes were a learning experience.

jimmytango

I've been riding for a few years, read all I can online and off about bikes, and (as of recently) work in a bike shop. I still don't know exactly what I want, other than more bikes.

I really have to think this out. I'm 4'11" makes a lot of things difficult. my road bike right now is 43cm with 650 wheels and they even had to adjust it since the reach was still pretty long.

the ground

jimmytango
08-29-12, 01:31 AM
Are you measuring your inseam like you would for pants, or what? Here's what you do. Get a book. A big ****ing hard book. You have one of those, right? Now shove your nuts out of the way with it and jam it up in your business. make sure that ***** is level, then measure from that to the ground. That's your inseam.

smoothness
08-29-12, 02:33 AM
less on inseam, more on reach. and this comes from a guy who wavers from 48 CM to 51 CM on frames. You're not supposed to be touching the ground when riding the bicycle, so don't worry so much about stand over height. the reach is infinitely more important when it comes to comfort.

____asdfghjkl
08-29-12, 08:51 PM
I don't have any nuts but yeah I put a book between my legs.
On my road bike the reach is still too long, they had to order a new stem for it. :(

Sup?

Maybe try one of these:
http://i46.tinypic.com/2lkr0r4.jpg

But srsly: Felt's TK2 and TK3 have 650c wheels in the 43cm size. You might also consider children's track bikes like the Dolan Kadet. Can't think of any others off the top of my head.

I feel like the reach on the 43cm Fuji Track Classic is pretty short, actually. I'm 5'1" and have a proportionally long torso and it's too short for me, so I got bullhorn bars to help me stretch out. Even with that I feel much more compact than on my road bike. Especially if they flip the stem (they did for me, it was too much saddle to bar drop originally). Go test ride it! Switching to riser bars might help on the reach too. Those track drops suuuuuuck anyway, you'll want to change them out.

1500 seems like a lot (like 3x too much) unless you're not talking about the Track Classic.

I disagree about the drops. Kaz, remember that I rode on your set of them for a while and liked them. I also need to figure out what tape I put on them because I ****ing loved it.

And yeah, $1500 is ludicrous for a Track Classic unless it's getting a ton of really good components. For. Normal build, $450-$550 is a much better range.

Check out IRO (http://www.irocycle.com/). They used to make one called the Heidi (not sure they still call it that). It was 43 cm with 650C wheels. I had a local shop order the frame and build it up with the exact components I wanted. But if you're less picky or don't know what you want, IRO gives you some decent choices and color-coordination options.

Good luck,

KB
