I'm doing a 4 day trail tour of the Erie Canal from Buffalo to Lake Cayuga and back in Oct. Any tips/must see things to do along the way? I have done the GAPCO twice and cycled from Cleveland to Cinci twice also so this isn't a gear post. We will be credit card touring with a planned stop in Brockport at the midpoint. Thanks.

I didn't go into this place on my ride through, but folks were talking about it. A little gem!

Erie Canal Tips
Don't drink the water. Those canals can get skunky.
Here's a link with some routing tips and links to historical sites. Have a great trip.

I'd say see the Lockport "cave" tour and take the boat ride through the locks.
Here's my journal from our two trips on the canal.

That's pretty cool. I've ridden my bike from Buffalo (Cheektowaga) to Lockport, but never really found the locks (my brother and I just rode out there when we were teenagers for something to do).

Too bad you missed the PTNY Erir Canal ride 400 miles. The stone dust gets into everything.
See if you can get the Erie Canal Guide Bok from PTNY

Just ride the canal. Things will present themselves. Our Trip in July 2012 (http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=1&doc_id=10773&v=7k)
