No, she doesn't do my laundry! I just left that jacket hanging in the laundry room closet and she said it was dirty and washed it.

I think they might sell some sort of spray to re-waterproof it.

Did you buy it at REI? Take it back and chew them out and insist on a refund or replacement. If not from REI call Patiguchi customer service and arrange a return and replacement.

My wife put my gortex in the washer and dryer. It melted.

Or you could just call Patagonia and ask what they recommend. I think they'll sell you their branded version of nikwax.

Assuming this is a Waterproof/Breathable jacket, they fall into two categories: Ones that use a coating for waterproof-ness and ones that use a membrane.

I avoid the ones with just a coating because they don't last. I know little about them.

The ones that use a membrane have a nylon outer with DWR finish, a waterproof membrane and a protective inner layer (if the inner layer is bonded to the membrane, it is referred as 3-ply. If not, it is 2-ply and will use a loose protective inner layer). These fabrics are either Gore-Tex or a manufacturer-specific clone. In Patagonia's case, their proprietary fabric is called H2NoŽ

It is likely that the only problem with this jacket is that the DWR coating has been worn off. When this occurs, the jacket is still waterproof, but its breathability is compromised. There are spray-on or wash-in products to restore the DWC coating. Look on Pategonia's website for the appropriate fabric care for your jacket.

What does she do with the other bits? Surely, you can't cut a sandwich into hearts without some waste.

Does she match your Garanimals up for you too?

Bad mom! Bad! But beggars can't exactly be choosers.
I would consider a destroyed jacket the cost of having Mom do your laundry for "free". Next time, get a cheaper jacket from Campmor or Cabela's or wherever and you won't feel so bad.

Moms can be like that. My parents have a key and last time they came to visit, I came home from work to find my mom had cleaned the kitchen, put away all the stuff on the counters, etc. I couldnt find my breakfast :)

Sounds like you should by more durable clothing. Really, how water proof can a water proof jacket be if it can't handle being soaked in water?

Clearly she needs to learn about sorting. Sweaters and patagonia jackets should never be washed together.;)

When my mom did that it took me weeks to find where everything was again.
