As a kid, I was so confused about the concept about exchange students. I thought you "traded" one of your kids for one of some other family's kids in a different country for a year (so they just swapped places). It wasn't until much later that someone explained to me that it was about a cultural "exchange" not a physical exchange of people.

My wife and I hosted short term (summer) exchange students over a several year period. Some from Japan, France and Finnland. We took one japanes girl to a civil war reenactment. I took the two French boys to a Cowboy Shoot. The group they were with went to ball games, museums and shopping. There was actually very little studying. I drove a bunch of them around Los Angeles one day. Hollywood sign, Manns Chinese Theatre footprints, Chinatown. Their reaction was universally Meh.
