Bicycle Mechanics - Another Junk Seatpost Thread - Ride time is declining.... ugh.

Well, I'm not going to make even 200 miles this month. My seatpost (the one with the black clamp in junk after about 500 miles. :notamused: Stripped grooves. It's going back. I'm thinking of ordering the Rockwerks (looks like an Origin8) that uses 2 bolts. Only $30 which is about all I can spend.

I figured out what happened. The block-nut on top doesn't seat entirely, no matter how much reefing on the wrench I do. (Not a good practice anyway) After a few hundred feet, it shifts and the mechanism gets just loose enough so the seat finally tilted back and stripped the grooves. Couldn't fix it enough for even a 3 mile ride today. Now I'm really grumpy.:notamused:

Try finding a used Thomson online. They're light, wonderfully stiff and usually $50-$60 with gentle use. I had the same problem with high end Campy seatposts for the longest time until I got my Thomson. It's indestructible and as light as carbon.

No joy tonight anyway. I'll keep looking. Tomorrow maybe I can find a used ...anything ... cheap in town and watch for a Thompson.

If 25.4 the red line BMX folks make a Chrome-moly seat post .. really strong ,
even if extended Up, Quite A Ways.. PlainTop .

Best saddle clip I Find is the one Brompton has currently made.
though C&V , French Ideale made several nice ones.

you should give one of these Kalloy posts a try. Light with infinite adjustments and the clamp holds firm. Comes in lots of sizes and can be found on Ebay and elsewhere for $15 to $30.

Second the Kalloy, cheap and good.

The rockwerks/origin8 doesn't put up with being overtightened, not that one should be reefing on things but I had one that while still usable became difficult to adjust after parts got deformed.

Also what size post are you looking for? Some of the odd sizes you only have two options, Thomson or Kalloy.

Thanks for the info and the "2nd" on the Kalloy and the caution on the Origin8. WOOOHOOO! I got lucky today - REI had a 26mm to swap for the stripped one and it fits perfectly! I'm only using abut 4 inches of the post so strength isn't too important there, just in the clamp. I'll just be more careful this time until I get a Thompson. Or if this one holds up, I'll get a Thompson when I get a new bike in a year or so.

Back on the road tomorrow! Woohoo!
