Great Lakes - Google MapMaker video featuring biking in Detroit

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I had the great fortune of recently working with Google and a top-notch film crew. The resulting article and video were just on Google's main blog site (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2012/08/mapping-motor-city-with-google-map-maker.html).

There are some great shots of our bike lanes and trails, as well as the East Side Riders.

Thank you, fishtoes. I'm thinking of doing the same for Troy, Clawson, Warren, and Royal Oak, but didn't know how to start.

AK404: Google has a guides to help explain how to edit in MapMaker. Two relevant to biking are:
Road attributes: http://support.google.com/mapmaker/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=191002&topic=1094373&ctx=topic
Trails and paths: http://support.google.com/mapmaker/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1098068&topic=1094382&ctx=topic

The cities you mention are fairly up to date. There are some trails in Troy parks that are missing. Some of bicycle suitability values for roads could be updated, but I'd been waiting until the SE Oakland County bicycle map is done. I figured that would be a good, vetted source of bicycle suitability information.

How do you access the versions of these maps for bike routes?

Which maps? The SE Oakland County maps are still being developed.

For Google Maps, there is a drop down menu on the upper right of the map. Just select Bicycling from that list.
