I asked how much to just buy a washing machine at a rent2own place and they wanted a few hundred dollars more than a new one would have cost, the scratches must add value. you want to watch TV? buy a pair of binoculars and watch the neighbor's.

Those places are ridiculous. I had a friend that furnished his entire first apartment with stuff from one of those... In the end he paid 2-3 times retail value easily.

If your neighbors had a big enough TV you wouldn't need the binoculars.

Hulk Hogan certainly lowered himself in my eyes when I saw him promoting one of those places. And that takes some doing .

My thoughts exactly when I first saw those commercials... I understand his wife took him for everything in the divorce and his spoiled kids bled him dry.

You can go lower than being a professional wrestler ?
I remember Hulk crying about how far he had fallen, from being World Champion of wrestling, to a broke divorced wrestler .... Hulk, you were never "World Champion". You played a character in a live action sit-com in which your character won a World Chapionship in a fictitious sport ..... a bit of a difference.

It's no coincidence that there is a cash store close by.

These places cater to the crowd that demands immediate satisfaction and don't know how to do math.

Exactly, or decent credit.
I got my sense of humor from a rent to own place. Only 73 more low weekly payments and it is all mine.

I have the same tv, bought it in 2005 and it still works. But everytime I walk into Costco I drool at the newer displays. I think it is time to upgrade...

I saw a rent-to-own case where the contract grouped together your monthly payments. For every purchase you made there over time while maintaining a balance (TV first, then next year a stereo, etc), it spread your subsequent monthly payments out over all of them. That sounds nice and convenient, until you realize that nothing ever gets completely paid off until the final balance (of everything you've ever bought) is down to 0. So they could (and did) come and take ALL of the lady's stuff when she defaulted. Contract was later deemed void, but yeah, read the fine print.

I've thought about setting up a tax service near a base....$200 for a 1040EZ...and those clowns will pay it.
I just have too much respect for myself to do that.

If your credit did not suck you would not be in a rent-to-own store.

Not necessarily, The bus stop near my last job was right by a rent-to-own store. If it was raining, that was the only place to stay dry.

Well yeah... he tried politics for a short while... I don't believe you can get lower than that.
Inspired by Jesse Ventura's successful bid for governor of Minnesota, Hogan announced his candidacy for U.S. President on the Tonight Show in 1998 http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/hulk-hogan/bio/154176

I know a guy who was a Senator, a Governor and Attorney General before he was banned from politics and disbarred. When lawyers and politicians won't have anything to do with you, that's falling low.
A free lesson from my father: It costs more to be poor. You pay more for most things. You shop in corner markets with bigger markups. You pay more for credit. Just about everything.

Unfortunately, that's all too true. Poorer people make for easier targets as they're a captive audience. So much of it is education and training from your parents. A vicious circle when both parents work +40 hrs/week and so little time is spent on the kid's upbringing. And then the cycle repeats when that kid grows up and has kids of their own.
One of the most profound examples of this immediate-gratification phenomenon is the famous Stanford Marshmellow study.
