1980 Chevy Citation.

We inherited TWO of those when my grandpa died.

My dumbest purchase has got to be 400 cheap lighters. I was like 12, a pyromaniac, saw them on ebay for under $20, and I still have most of them over 10 years later. I have to keep them in an ammo box and go outside to release the gasses every once in awhile.

Ha! I got one of those too. Didn't work out too badly really, $25 for the car, $100 for a transaxle, $50 for pop rivets to put a new floor in, and I got 6 months out of it before it seized up and died on me. Not that any single individual minute of those months was anything less than painful, but it worked, pretty much.

A 1985 Renault Alliance, makes the Citation look like a BMW. Trust me I had a Citation a bit after the Alliance and it was way better that that Alliance.

I bought myself a small slot car set in my early 20's. It wasn't as fun as I remembered. I gave it to a church before the next christmas.

It looked something like that and I got sick to my stomach. That was about 7 years ago... never ate there again.

An '89 Miata. Don't get me wrong, the car was extremely fun during spirited driving, but aside from that it was terrible as a daily driver when I still had my Civic wagon. I had for about a week before it started making disturbing noises that I never could figure out. Water from the air conditioner leaked into the cockpit. The top was completely trashed, so I bought another used from a guy for $200 (frame and all), installed it, and never could get the side seals to not leak. Then the zipper for the rear window just seized up completely and started separating from the clear plastic. Then, while trying to finagle the window open, I somehow managed to crease it just right to pop a big hole in it. Then I noticed the radiator had hairline cracks all along the top tank and antifreeze was seeping out. Sold it about a month after I bought it and lost about $1000 (and was lucky to get what I did). The Civic's air conditioning didn't work, but other than that it was a better car by several orders of magnitude. The sad thing is, for a fraction of what I paid for the Miata, I could have repaired the Civic's AC. But not after losing all that money.

It's a toss up for me. It was either a nehru jacket  (circa '67) or my first new car. 1971 Vega

As of late people really like to turn Vega wagons into into sleeper drag cars. It's pretty comical seeing such an infamous car, a wagon at that, getting its front wheels off the ground. I understand they were horribly underpowered and unreliable.

Once I went to a new Mexican food drive through in a nice neighborhood. The burrito they served me had the entire chicken spine inside. I didn't get sick, because I didn't get past the first bite, but I never went back.

'68 VW Fastback. I was a kid. Should have seen all the warning signs. Horrible roach of a car. Ended up getting me laid for the first time through a complicated string of events.

'87 Honda VFR 700. Pearl white, gorgeous bike. An amazing piece of jewelry on wheels. Completely the wrong bike for me. Liked my old Kawasaki GPZ 750 much better. Honda died an ugly death on Interstate 15 150 miles from Vegas one Sunday morning. Car changed lanes right in front of me. I was clipping along at 80, he was doing much less. The driver left me for dead on the side of the road.

My knee was injured. To get it back in shape, I started riding bicycles again. And here I am.

Late 60's something MG Midget. I used this to commute from lower Westchester County, NY to Danbury, CT, in the winter, early 70's. As I drove up I684 I would get passed by semi's. I could see how filthy the bottom of the trailer was. I froze my ass off all winter until I paid dearly for a mechanic learned in the ways of British automobiles to turn some valves in the engine compartment that allowed the hot coolant to circulate into the passenger compartment. F _ C _ _ _ G British !.

Worse yet was the next car was an AMC Gremlin. I cannot to this day discuss this adventure in automotive surrealism.

I bought a packet of nematodes several years ago when we had a japanese beetle grub problem in our yard. The nematodes were supposed to kill the grubs. What I got for almost $200 was a small packet of what appeared to be floor sweepings. I had no way to verify if they were actually nematodes or not, but they did nothing to control the grubs. I ended up using chemicals (Grub-X) to kill them anyway - which was what I was trying to avoid by getting the nematodes.

nematodes are bad news for the tomatoe garden. Use the chemicals from now on.
