Back not good but a few short gentle rides have not proved a problem. No hills done yet and won't be for a while but "Possibly" a Pie training ride tomorrow if I haven't put it back today. Got to get fit for next Friday as a trip to the paraOlympics is on that day. I will not be missing that for anything.

Stap,
Er, the 3rd Saturday is the 15th BTW.
Just testing:innocent:
Realised that last night when I found out that Friday is the 14th:eek:
Must be the difference in Time changes--Either that or I am getting ahead of my self.
Save a new post--- 3rd. Saturday in September is the 50+ Annual Pie ride. Rules are simple- You go for a ride and you have Pie. Mileage is not that important but the recognised distance is 15 miles or more. Newcomers and those struggling to get to 15 miles just have to ride the distance they can but the important part is Pie.
But just a warning to newcomers--Get training now. It takes practice to reach the upper levels of this event- do not ecpect to jump in and have the Ultimate of Blueberry on your first attempt. That takes some working up to so I suggest you start with Apple and gradually work up to Blueberry.
We do not have many blueberries over here but it is Autumn. We have a similar High end pie in "Autumn Fruits" and I presume some of you have a similar problem.
So just 12 days of practice before the ride so get training.

Great news and bad news.
The great news is that Trailnet in St Louis is sponsoring an organized ride on Sept. 16 that visits the Grant Fork historic Diamond Mineral Springs restaurant in Illinois. They changed the name but this used to be called the "Foot High Pie Ride". How perfect is that? Actually, only the meringue topped pies were a foot high (and I never actually measured one) but the double crust pies are pretty deep too. I highly recommend this option for all 50+ folks in the St Louis area.
The bad news is that I might not make it. Only the 42 mile and longer routes go to the restaurant and Mrs. grouch's knee doctor isn't going to approve that long of a ride. I'm not going to abandon her for a piece of pie. We'll see what else is going on that day.
Ah yes, we have a similar ritual here on the central coast, it takes place at Gizdich Ranch....

YEA!! The only BF ride I feel that the Mrs. and I are, "up to the task", with the rest of the membership!! ;) The only bummer is I REALLY don't like the taste of Blueberries, sorry. :(

Just curious, other than the scrumptious looking fare, what is special about Saturday, September 15?

That's pie ride day. I don't know why that particular weekend got chosen, but it's been a 50+ feature for several years. Maybe Denver will give us a clue.
While you're at it, you need to find someone who will show you our secret hand signal too.

... we have a secret hand signal? Is it the "Get off my lawn!" fist shake? The "Ooh, my aching back!" lumbar clutch? ;)

Ah, that makes sense that I didn't know. I've only been here since Oct '11.

Whichever you're more deficient. That'd be riding for me.

It's just one finger. I've been surprised at how many friendly 50+ ers flash me the secret hand signal every day.

This should work out well since I have scheduled to ride the "Flatlander" that Saturday in Newton, Ks. The scheduled distance is 65 miles which is more than my age.
That very day Jethro and I are doing the Bob Galloway Memorial Amish Country ride in Arthur, IL. In past years the ride included an Amish meal afterward that featured pie for dessert. This year for some reason they changed to BBQ. We'll have to see what desserts are offered. Or I could stop in Champaign on my way home for my very favorite pie:

That day will work just great for me. It's the "Bike for the Health of It" program with the local parks and the scheduled ride is just under 20 miles. We always stop it eat after the ride.....I'll be sure to have a piece of pie!

Sept 15, 2012. Think I'll ride this year. I might even get my wife and daughter to do the 2 miles Family Fun Walk/Ride together. :)

Well I just put in 59 miles today for a belated birthday solo ride. I am now 57. So I don't think that 65 will be a problem. There should also be plenty of younger riders that I can tuck in behind and draft off of.

Well, I did a practice ride today -- it's almost exactly 15 miles to Marie Callender's from my house. Since it was just a practice ride, I had Key Lime pie. I'll have blueberry on the 15th, though.

I'll be riding the 92 miles out and up to Luray, VA for a men's conference on Friday the 14th. I can guarantee that there will be pie when I stop in Luray. I've decided on the touring bike, so there will be plenty of low gears as needed. Then it's 92 miles home on Sunday the 16th, with a lot more downhill, but less daylight.
This will be my first-ever pie ride. Phil

Can't remember the first Pie but I do remember the first Annual 50+ PIE ride and hopefully DnvrFox can supply details. I remember that as we do not have blueberry over here I had to hunt out a Pie suitable for the ride. It settled out as Autumn Fruit crumble (The nearest i could think of to blueberry) and custard and it was fantastic.Problem was the coffee was not so went down to my usual Cafe on the seafront for a good coffee and another slice of Pie.

Shouldn't a pie ride take place on March 14th? Or April 13th for those on the other side of the pond?

It may not have been my first but I definitely remember the one my grandma made in which she got the sugar and the salt mixed up. I was raised to be a polite child who choked down any food with a smile so it was someone else who declared there was something wrong with it. Too bad too cuz it was plumped full of rhubarb and should have been delightful.

We usually do PIE for March 14 each year here but that isn't the official PIE Ride day. Any day is good for PIE to us:thumb:. The September day was decided a few years ago, Denver and Stap would remember, they predate me, in more than one way:rolleyes:. So the third Saturday in September has stuck. Finding a reason for PIE isn't hard just ride your bike and have a slice.
BTW, Welcome to 50+ and BF Ramona, hope you will stick around. Did I mention I really like PIE?

OMG, if I ate pie for every 16½ miles I rode, I certainly wouldn't have trouble packing on some more weight. Wait!! Don't let my wife see this post!!!! She'll insist I follow the regimen for a while to add some padding back as she says I'm too boney.

First 50+ Pie ride must have been in 2006 as I was on the OCR then. The rest must have been in the sixties as I can't remember them.
Stap-Near as I can tell the 1st pie ride was in 2006.

This Saturday, I will be riding a 50 mile "Tour des Farms" Ride. In addition to training for the Pie-ride, I will be scoping out a suitable location for pie. This may include training for the actual consumption of my Pie-ride pie. Some say: "Proper pie preparation prevents poor pie-ride performance."

I am busy all Saturday so won't be able to ride until Sunday. Our hot "summer" weather has started here, so the miles might be done indoors on a spin bike. Either way, I'll still have pie.

I haven't had pie (yet!), but I did have a great 25 mile ride (http://www.sportstracklive.com/track/map#lphilpot/Cycling/temporary-/772807/full) this morning at Le Tour de Bayou, hosted by Kent House in Alexandria, Louisiana. The turnout was great for this, the first year of this annual event. They anticipated 200 participants, but before the ride started this morning they had exceeded 600! Everything appears to have gone off smoothly, so here's to a good and safe ride for the 66 and 100 milers still on the road.
Oh yeah, forgot to add: As far as I saw, I was the only 50+ jerseyed rider there. Local media was there to some degree, but I have no idea who or what got captured... :)
And one last edit - I just found this photo on our local newspaper's website, I'd post a URL instead but it's a gallery of 60 images (http://www.thetowntalk.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Avis=DK&Dato=20120915&Kategori=NEWS&Lopenr=209150802&Ref=PH&nclick_check=1), so this screen capture is eaiser):
