So as I slowly make plans for my Thylacine, and plan purchase, etc. A unnamed member of this forum puts this little image in my head..

http://www.velomax.co.uk/admin/images/fs/cinellialterstem_fs.jpg

It's a monster of beauty and purpose. I am in awe and I want one. I've heard rumours they are no longer made.

Who knows what and where?

William - hard to find these days. I tracked em down to the UK but they won't ship here. There are two on eBay right now (yes, I'm waiting to bid on one, actually I've lost a bunch of bidding wars on them). Andrew Muzi at yellow Jersey was talking to me about them and he has (or had) three in stock but you'll have to pay 90 bucks for one, which is a tad expensive for my tastes. What pissed me off was that on New Years Day, I forgot to bid on a black one on eBay and it went for $14! Argh!

So, yeah, if anyone has one, PM me. Or Will.

I've heard they don't have it in stock, though I've emailed.

Anyone used it?

Just as and FYI, they are only 1" steerer tubes. Can't remember whether the new frame is 1" or 1 1/8" .

Cinelli Alter and they came with a pinup girl to cover the top. Mmmmmmmm.

Hey WK, is that a sailor hat on the top one? :)

There are two for sale on Ebay right now. One in the UK, and one in the US.

The top one has a hat for an E7 (Chief Petty Officer) on it, which is also for Officers.

So, if I pick up LDO this time, sure. If I make E7, sure that'd be a sailor hat for me... :)

I see on the one web site it comes in colors: Specifically, yellow and black. Perfect for the Thylacine.

Man, I must the only one who doesn't like those things. I would much rather a conventional threadless or quill stem. Too Star Trek: TNG Klingon style for my taste.

No, I'm sure there are a lot of people who don't like them. Honestly, I can agree, those stems are a like or don't like.

It fits a need: strong and unique. If I can find one that doesn't cost a bajillion dollars, good to go.

Ehh. First time I've ever seen 'em and, I'm not too fond of the look either.
Maybe if the logo wasn't so huge it'd look better. Or just leave the logo on the cap and the rest of the stem bare...

WK - I've got one that I used for a few months... got it off eBay for $25. I'm surprised you guys are finding them so expensive: almost every eBay auction I've seen for them is in the $30 range.

BUT: mine's busted. See that three bolt faceplate? Mine developed a crack on the inside face of the plate at the bottom hole, which has since expanded to half the faceplate. Creaks likes the dickens, and frankly is downright unsafe. I don't use it anymore. Emailed Cinelli about a replacement faceplate, but they don't do that sort of thing. So I'm left with a beautifully CNC-machined stiff-as-hell paperweight.

Anybody got an extra faceplate? ;-)

absntr: I ordered a frame pump from XXCycle a couple of years ago, and it was a good experience. They ship from France, so shipping time was something like 4 weeks, but the pump was cheap, shipping was reasonable, and they warned about long ship times beforehand.

On a small frame, that stem would stick out like a sore thumb. It should look nice and proportional on a larger frame. These stems are massive. The Cinelli Starship road frame's upper seatstays are machined identically as these stems....very unique.

Fixer, the frame I'm putting it on has over size tubes that are.. pear shaped.. So it would seem to fit. Well, seem to anyway.

I gots to say I don't really like the look, but I bet they are a hell of a lot stiffer than the bargain bin Cinelli stem I gots. Mine's real flexy, almost flaccid. It makes me sad.

I don't like the 80 degree angle. For me, -17 degree or lower for maximum glute utilization.

Pear shaped oversized tubes would go really well with the Profile H2O stem.
This 115/65 degree one will give you a slight drop from horizontal ala track stem.

I saw a red one on a bike recently. Its really big. My first reaction was "damn thats ugly" but then I stepped back and took it for what it is. It sure isn't trying to be anything its not, and the pinup plate is a cool tongue in cheek way of putting it.

when i was working in london, there was this courier who used to ride around with his radio clipped into one of the holes on his alter stem. i ran across a bunch of them - black on silver and orange on blue, all 1", 80, 130mm - the other day, so if anyone's interested ...

It's got 5 whole days left. It'll go for a lot. I am still pi$$ed when I didn't get the one on the day after New Years for $15! Ack.

had it. stripped it tightening the bolts on steer tube. Not that crazy about it. The stem was pretty flexi even though it was huge. All that cnc metal added some extra weight too!
