Track Cycling: Velodrome Racing and Training Area - track gearing?

I live in san francisco and ride a 42x16...about 70 gear inches, but what is a good gear for the track. I current spin out on the flats. I'm thinking about going with a 48 chinring which will get me to about 81 gear inches. I converted a freewheel hub and locktighted the 16 cog in the rear so I don't want to change out the cog. will a 48 get me in the range?

I'd go 48 or maybe 49, but it all depends on your track. Go there and talk to people, see what everyone else uses.

you may wanna reconsider forkin' over the cash for a 48 chinring. if you are a newbie to the track and crash comin' outta turn three, that chinring is gonna become a throatring.

and 83-90 inches is typical track ratio for beginners....of course, depending on your event, gears will change.

i hope you're not planning on riding that setup on the track.

Hey, safer on the track than on the street... or sumthin.

On the other hand most tracks will require that you have a proper track hub with lockring.

I used the red locktight...I've been riding it around town and down many hills and appling backpressure on the thing and it has been rock solid...the thing is not coming off!

I've been looking into track wheels, I like the look of miche hubs! gota save my pennies.
